How to manually update bank accounts

Once you connect a bank account, for most financial institutions, QuickBooks Online automatically downloads your transaction data each night. If you need to, you can also manually update these accounts to add any transactions that have cleared since the last automatic download.

Manually update American Express accounts

While most financial institutions allow both nightly downloads and manual updates, American Express has different limitations.

  • Some American Express accounts: American Express limits the frequency of automatic downloads, so QuickBooks Online may automatically download your data 2-3 times a week instead of every night. However, you can manually update your account between automatic downloads.
  • American Express OPEN accounts connected to QuickBooks Online using Connect to American Express OPEN: American Express downloads newly posted transactions for these accounts nightly, but with this connection, you can't manually update your account between nightly downloads.

Manually update all other bank accounts

  1. Go to Banking, then select Update. QuickBooks Online updates all of your connected bank and credit card accounts.
If you only want to update some accounts, select the unwanted ones to exclude them from the update, then select Update now.
  2. If prompted, enter your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) credentials, then select Continue update.
(Multi-Factor Authentication is any security precaution other than a username and password.)

You can keep working in QuickBooks Online while the accounts update, as the process might take a few moments. QuickBooks Online notifies you when the updates are complete.
