Manually download online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online

Learn how to get the latest available transactions from your bank and credit card accounts.

Once you connect a bank account to online banking, QuickBooks Online automatically downloads your transaction data each night. You can select Update when you're reviewing to get the latest available transactions the last automatic download.

Most financial institutions allow both nightly downloads and manual updates. American Express accounts are slightly different:

  • Some American Express accounts: American Express limits the frequency of automatic downloads, so QuickBooks Online may automatically download your data 2-3 times a week instead of every night. However, you can manually update your account between automatic downloads.
  • American Express OPEN accounts connected to QuickBooks Online using Connect to American Express OPEN: American Express downloads newly posted transactions for these accounts nightly, but with this connection, you can't manually update your account between nightly downloads.

  1. Go to the Banking menu or Transactions menu, then select Update. If you only want to update some accounts, select the unwanted ones, then select Update now.
  2. If asked, enter your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) credentials. Then select Continue update.

You can keep working in QuickBooks while the accounts update. The update can take a few minutes. QuickBooks notifies after it updates your accounts and gets the latest transactions.
