Upgrade your QuickBooks Desktop Pro Plus, Premier Plus, Enterprise, or Mac Plus to the latest version to access current security updates and features. Upgrades are included in your subscription plan at no additional cost.

Note: The upgrade duration depends on your internet speed and the size of your company file(s).

Important preparation

Before upgrading, back-up your company files to prevent data loss.

• Windows users: Back up your company file for Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Enterprise.
• Mac users: Back up your company file for Mac Plus.

Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop for Windows

Select one of the following methods to upgrade your Windows version.

Method 1: Use the automatic prompt

When a new version is available, a prompt appears automatically upon opening the software.

1. Open QuickBooks Desktop and select Upgrade Now.
2. Select your version preference:
   • To keep the current version, select Keep old version on my computer, then select Let's go.
   • To remove the current version, leave the option blank and select Let's go.
3. Wait for the download, installation, and activation to complete.
4. Select Open QuickBooks.

Method 2: Use Discovery Hub

1. Select Discovery Hub next to your profile icon.
2. Select Upgrade to QuickBooks 2024.
3. Select Proceed to upgrade, then select Upgrade Now.
4. Select your version preference:
   • To keep the current version, select Keep old version on my computer, then select Let's go.
   • To remove the current version, leave the option blank and select Let's go.
5. Wait for the process to complete, then select Open QuickBooks.

Method 3: Use the QuickBooks Desktop Manager

1. Locate your license information in your Intuit account or purchase confirmation email.
2. Open the QuickBooks Desktop Manager.
3. Enter your license info when prompted.
4. Follow the on-screen instructions to finish the upgrade.

Method 4: Upgrade for Rightworks users

• Account owners or admins: You can install updates for yourself or other users.
• Standard users: You can only install updates for yourself.
• Other hosting providers: Contact your provider directly for assistance.

Troubleshoot missing prompts

If the upgrade prompt does not appear, restore one-time messages.

1. Go to Edit and select Preferences.
2. Select General, then select My Preferences.
3. Select Bring back all one time messages, then select OK.
4. Close and reopen QuickBooks to view the upgrade prompt.

Upgrade QuickBooks Desktop for Mac Plus

Ensure you are in single-user mode before starting. If Multiuser Mode is enabled under the File menu, select Disable Multiuser Mode.

Method 1: Use the automatic prompt

1. Open QuickBooks Desktop.
2. When the prompt appears, select Upgrade for Free.
3. Select Let’s go to download and install the new version.
4. Select Open QuickBooks when the upgrade finishes.
5. Activate or register the new version.

Note: QuickBooks Desktop for Mac Plus automatically keeps the old version on your computer.

Method 2: Use the Help menu

If the automatic prompt does not appear, use the Help menu.

1. Go to the Help menu and select Upgrade QuickBooks.
2. Select Upgrade for Free.
3. Select Let’s go.
4. Select Open QuickBooks when the upgrade finishes.
5. Activate or register the new version.
