QB 2004 Pro re-install issue
How do I restore backup from Quickbooks Pro 2004. My hard drive crashed and have a new hard drive. Re-installed the software from a disk. Now I cannot restore backup.
My backup file (.QBB) is on a flash drive. It will not open using File -> Restore function. I moved a copy of backup to my desktop and still cannot restore.

Hi, @brihawki.
Thanks for providing information about restoring your backup from QuickBooks.
Let me help restore that backup file from your flash drive. First, you'll need to copy the backup file from your flash drive to your hard disk or local disc drive before restoring your backup file into QuickBooks.
Once you're done saving the copy to your drive, you can proceed to the following steps below:
- Go to the File menu, then select Open or Restore Company.
- Select Restore a backup copy, then Next.
- Choose Local Backup, then Next.
- From the Look In drop-down, choose the location of the backup file.
- Select the backup file from the folder. The file name should appear as [Company Name].qbb.
- Select Open, then Next.
- From the Save in drop-down, choose the location where you want to save the restored file.
- In the File name field, type a new file name. Note that the Save as type field will automatically populate QuickBooks Files (*.QBW).
- Select Save, then carefully read and respond to any messages that appear before restoration begins.
That should do it. Keep me posted if you have other questions about restoring your backup. I'm here to help.

There is no Current Windows computer that can run QB 2004. Intuit has a 3-year lifecycle for the desktop program. Worse, your data file is from before the change in QB 2007 (released in 2006) from a flat table structure to a true relational database. Your data file is 15 years behind current computer programs and software.
You would buy QB 2019; you would ask Intuit to update that file for you, because this is a Major update/conversion to the newer Datafile structure.

QB 2004 looks nothing like those screenshots. Those started with QB 2013.

I’m still stuck. Responses, the few there were, were unhelpful. Seems they don’t read them closely enough. Going to see if my accountant’s copy will open it. Otherwise see if I can get someone to get data of my old hard drive.

We told you everything you need to know.
Unless you have Windows XP, you cannot install and run QB 2004 on any current Windows computer, so don't bother to install it here.
Yes, the data file needs to be Updated by using it in the newer program, but you are asking about a 15-year Leap. You also have a file from before the data file was changed from flat tables to a true relational database.
"Responses, the few there were, were unhelpful"
I'm sorry you are still stuck. We, your Peer users, all read this very specifically and gave the right answers.
Did you ask Intuit to update that file for you, along with your purchase of QB 2019? That is all you needed to do.

We have the same issue as the program will now not open since we did a cleanup of the computer because it says it needs Windows 6.0 or newer.
I will call them today and ask them to walk me through how to convert this over to the new format. Thankfully I backup QuickBooks daily onto the hard drive and onto a stick!

Once you change computers, you'll be unable to reinstall or reactivate QuickBooks 2004, AllMortgages. That version is already unsupported.
The Desktop versions are supported for three years. You'll want to upgrade to the latest one. Then, you can convert your company files.
The reason for the upgrade is because Windows 10 or later is not one of the supported Operating Systems of QuickBooks 2004. This means that you'll be unable to get the best Desktop experience.
If there's anything else that I can do for you, please don't hesitate to get back to this thread.

Try installing and running in compatibility mode Win 7 on your Win 10. If the system asks for an activation code, you are helpless. Support won't generate the activation code for old versions. Consider upgrading to QBD 2021 or 2020 at a lower one-time license price.

Hi,
Maybe you can help me out. I have my quickbooks 2004 install cd and no matter what key codes I use I get an incorrect code message. Is there a universal key code or some other process I can use to install the old program and retrieve my company files from that year?
Many thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi,
Maybe you can help me. I have quickbooks 2004 and am trying to install it from the CD on a windows 7 pc. When I get to the product key I enter the numbers from the old program and get an invalid key response. I know this is the correct key, but I understand Intuit changes it every three years. Did you have any trouble installing 2004 version on your PC, or is there a universal key code that I can use to install the program and retrieve my company files from those years?
Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Allan

Thanks for joining us, @wrpb358m.
I have some information about installing the QuickBooks 2004 version. As mentioned by the above posts, we're unable to generate activation codes for old versions.
You might want to try installing and running in compatibility mode (Windows 7 or Windows 10) as suggested by our Allstar @Fiat Lux - ASIA. See this article for details: Install QuickBooks Desktop.
However, if it still asks you for the code, you'll have to consider upgrading to QuickBooks 2021 or 2022 version.
I'm attaching this link here to guide you along in fixing validation code errors: Fix activation, license, and product numbers errors.
Please let me know how it goes after trying the above recommendations as I wanted to ensure this is resolved for you. Take care and have a nice day ahead.

Thank you for your help. By changing the date back to 2004 the CD was able to accept my original key code. Although some fonts would not load, it appears the program is installed and running. I am now able to restore my old company files. I will be upgrading to a current version of Quickbooks in the near future to avoid any compatability issues. Once again, thank you for your help.
