Update your EFTPS Internet password

Learn how to update your EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System) Internet password.

NOTE: Effective October 24, 2019 IRS is implementing the following requirements for your EFTPS Internet password:
  • A 13-month expiration policy will be implemented. This means that your password expires after 13 months from the time it was changed.
  • For QuickBooks Desktop Payroll Enhanced users, the password length requirement will be increased from 8-12 characters to 12-30 characters.
  • If you have updated your password in the past 13 months, your existing password with 8-12 characters will still work.
  • If you have not updated your password in the past 13 months or is the system-generated password, your payment will be rejected and you will be forced to update your password on the EFTPS website before you can send the payment.

If you are the owner of an EFTPS account, you can reset your EFTPS Internet password. To do so, you need to have your Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), PIN, and Internet password.

When you change your Internet password, your new password must meet the security requirements. Secure passwords must have 12-30 characters and contain:

  • At least one uppercase alpha (for example, A, B, or C)
  • One lowercase alpha (for example, a, b, or c)
  • At least one numeral (for example, 1, 2, 3) or one of the following special characters:!, @, #, $, *, +, -
