Pay taxes using our electronic services

To pay taxes electronically, you must enroll to our electronic services first. To enroll and activate electronic services, see Enroll to e-file and pay taxes electronically for more details.

Ensure that your bank account has sufficient funds to cover the tax payment before you create and approve it. This is to prevent your payroll account from being on hold due to insufficient funds. Also, Intuit does not manage an impound account on your behalf for electronic payments.

Pay taxes directly to the federal and state agencies

Pay your taxes directly to the federal and state agencies if:

  • You are not signed up for our electronic services
  • You are using Intuit Online Payroll Basic
  • Intuit does not support electronic services for your state

IRS requires you to pay taxes electronically. If you're not signed up for our electronic services, sign up directly with the IRS Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). With EFTPS, you can approve the payment, and the IRS automatically withdraws the funds from your account.

Most of the state agencies offer electronic payments through their website. You can contact your state agencies on how to sign up with their electronic services.

If you choose to mail your payment to the state agency, you can send the payment along with the payment coupon. We can provide you a payment coupon after recording the tax payment in your Online Payroll account. In the event that we do not support the payment coupon, contact your state agency to get one. Note that some state agencies do not accept manual payment. Enroll in our electronic services or contact your state agency to check for options in paying taxes.

When you pay taxes outside Intuit, you also need to record the payment in your Online Payroll account to remove the tax due and tag it as paid. Recording a tax payment generates a payment coupon which you need in sending the payment in the mail. To record a tax payment made outside Intuit, see  Recording prior tax payments for more details.

Not Supported

You can upgrade your payroll service to Intuit Online Payroll Enhanced to use the electronic services feature.
State tax due notifications are for Payroll Enhanced users only. If you have the Intuit Online Payroll Basic subscription, you can run a Tax Liability Report to know your state tax liabilities and pay it manually. To run a tax liability report:
  1. Select Reports.
  2. In the Employer Reports section, select Tax Liability.
  3. Change the date Range as needed, and then select Update Report.
