Can you create smaller products from larger products in Quickbooks Online?

For example, my client buys 15kg bags but sells them as 1kg and 250g bags is there a way to track that?

Hi there, @Kathybif.

The option to create smaller products out of larger items is unavailable in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

For now, you'll have to manually create products for smaller bags that you sell. That way, you can track them individually in QuickBooks.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Get paid & pay and select Products and services.
  2. Click New.
  3. Select Inventory, Non-inventory or Service.
  4. Add a name. If you track SKUs, enter a SKU for the product.
  5. From the Category ▼ drop-down list, choose the category that best describes your product or service.
  6. Click the I sell this product/service to my customers checkbox. If you don't sell the item, you can leave it unchecked.
  7. Enter a description. This is what your customers will see on their sales form.
  8. Enter an amount in the Sales price/rate field.
  9. Select the Income account ▼ dropdown and the account you want to use to track the sale.

I can see how this option would be helpful for you in handling your business. Thus, I'll take note of this as a suggestion to improve your experience in QuickBooks.

On the other hand, you can send feedback to our product developers. That way, they can review your suggestions and most likely include them on future updates.

Furthermore, there are four different types of items: services, non-inventory, inventory, and bundles. These assist you in better tracking by categorizing the goods and services. You can choose wisely with the guidance of this article:
Change product and service item types in QuickBooks Online.

Please feel free to mention me if you need further assistance. I'll be glad to work with you again. Have a good one!

@Kathybif

You need an additional app to do so.

In term of cost, you can explore this one and they offer the lowest plan for free. They use the Unit as the field to measure units. Currently you can only sell your items using a single unit standard, but you can manage sub units by selling the same in fractional quantities. If you wish to sell 1 kg and 250 gr of your package, then you can do so by specifying the quantity as 0.066 and 0,016 in the sales order.

The drawback is it doesn't support QBO natively and you will need a connector to integrate with it.

Another app offer a better option and it supports QBO natively. You can define a specific product by weight.  Their fee starts at USD 67/month for 3 users. If you are interested in exploring them, send me a private message and I will introduce you to them.
