Opening emails inside QBO isn't a feature that's available at this time. You do have the option to send a receipt through email and then attach it, though you'll have to manually create the expense transaction for that.

Sorry to barge in here but I don't see a receipts tab in the Banking section of my quickbooks online account. Does this mean the feature is not available in Australia yet? I am very much looking forward to this feature, it's a pain uploading receipts the current way.

You're correct. The Receipts feature, which was just recently implemented, is only available in the US version of QBO.
For other regions, uploading and receipt attachments are done manually. Your feedback about adding this feature in QBO Australia will be forwarded to our product engineers. The more request we get, the more likely it'll be implemented in QBO versions outside the US.
