Can I change Quickbooks Online provider without losing data

I subscribe to QBO through an accounting firm. Their office is over a thousand km's away from where I am, so I had mentioned that I may want to switch to a local provider.

One of the staff told me that if I switch to another provider (accountant) then all data will be lost and I'll have to restart with the new account.

Is this true? Sounds like they are just wanting to keep subscribers.

Let's make sure you'll be able to use the same QuickBooks Online (QBO) account when switching to a local provider, Customfab.

It seems you're under a ProAdvisor Preferred Pricing plan. If so, once your accountant removes you from the discount plan, you can either inform the other provider to add you on their ProAdvisor discount plan or start paying for your subscription. You can let the accounting firm who previously manage your account to remove you on the list of their discount plan. To do this, let them follow the steps below:

  1. If you haven't already, make your client the primary admin of their company file.
  2. In QuickBooks Online Accountant, go to Settings ⚙ and then Billing and subscriptions.
  3. Select the Your subscriptions tab.
  4. Select the client you want to remove.
Note: If the client is currently inactive, make them active first.
  5. From the Select actions▼ dropdown, select Transfer billing to client.

Please know that once you're removed from your accounting firm's list or the so called ProAdvisor discount plan, this doesn't impact your accounting  data in any way. So you don't have to worry. To give you more details about discount plan, read this article so you'll know how this works: Manage Your ProAdvisor Preferred Pricing Plan and ProAdvisor Discount Clients.

Aside from that, since you want to transfer from another accounting firm, you can also ask your new provider to remove you from your previous discount plan and add you to their firm. To give you a guide on how you'll be able to do it, check out this article for more information: Transfer Clients To Your Wholesale Discount Plan In QuickBooks Online.

@Customfab

Unless you have no dispute with your accountant, they will easily transfer the Primary Admin role to you. But if you are not sure and you can still access as Company Admin, you should immediately secure your data to migrate to a new account.

Can I change Quickbooks Online provider without losing data

Thankyou, how do I secure the data?

I'm not in a dispute with the provider at the moment, although there is an issue with their billing. I don't think I've received an accurate invoice since the first year of subscription. The provider assures me that they know I have no overdue fees, even though the invoices show $630 outstanding (this month)

It's been like this for probably three (or more) years now. I have asked for this to be rectified but get a story about lost passwords etc.

Out of interest I checked my Billing and Subscription info; there is no payment history at all. Is this legit?

I'd be happy to provide more information about your concern, Customfab.

When the accounting firm removes you from their plan, you'll have to pay for your own subscription. As @MariaSoledadG mentioned, this process has no effect on your accounting data. For more information, go to the Remove a client from your ProAdvisor discount plan section in this article: Manage your ProAdvisor Preferred Pricing plan and ProAdvisor discount clients.

To keep a copy of your transactions,  export the reports, lists, non-posting entries, and attachments via Excel. The resources listed below will walk you through the entire process:

Regarding your subscription, I recommend contacting the accounting firm. You can then inquire about the $630 fee and the payment history.

Check out the following guide to learn more about your accounting firm's wholesale discount program and how they handle the plan:
