Learn how to fix Error UEXP when downloading payroll updates or activating retail payroll in QuickBooks Desktop.
You'll see the error message, "We are having difficulties verifying your account status. Error=UEXP". When trying to download a payroll update or activate your retail payroll.
Error UEXP when activating retail payroll
This may be caused by a disabled retail payroll license or special characters in your company name, legal address, chart of accounts, and contact name. Contact us to resolve this error.
Error UEXP when downloading payroll update
This may be caused by any of the following:
- An outdated QuickBooks Desktop release.
- An outdated version of e-file and e-pay in the current company file after upgrading to QuickBooks Desktop.
- A payroll subscription is not yet activated in QuickBooks Desktop.
To fix the error, follow these steps:
- Update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release.
- Go to Employees, select My Payroll Service, then select Manage Service Key.
- If you are using direct deposit; select Edit, then select Next. Uncheck the Open Payroll Setup box, then select Finish.
- If you don’t use direct deposit; select Remove. Select Yes twice.
- Then download the payroll updates again.
