Fix error 15106 in QuickBooks Desktop

Learn how to fix error 15106 when you update QuickBooks Desktop.

If you see one of these errors, your antivirus app blocked your QuickBooksupdate or you aren’t signed in as the Windows admin user.

  • Error 15106: The update program cannot be opened or 
  • Error 15106: The update program is damaged

Here’s how to fix these errors and update QuickBooks Desktopsuccessfully.

Solution 1: Sign in to your computer as an admin

Note: If you have a QuickBooks Desktop payroll subscription turned on, download the latest tax table after every step to keep your payroll info isn't accurate.

  1. Right-click on QuickBooks Desktop, then select Run as Administrator. 
  2. Try to update QuickBooks.

If you see the same error and you have an antivirus app installed, continue to Solution 2.

If you see the same error and don't have an antivirus app, re-install QuickBooks Desktop in Selective Startup.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc on your keyboard to open the Task Manager.
  2. Go to Processes, then look for [ANTIVIRUS].exe.
    Example: Spy Sweeper.exe.
    Note: If you get an error, uninstall the antivirus application.
  3. Select End Process.
  4. Rename the QuickBooksupdate folder.
    1. Press Windows key+E on your keyboard to open File Explorer.
    2. Go to C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks(year)\Components.
      For 64-bit users, go to C:\Program Files(x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks(year)\Components.
    3. Right-click on the downloadqbXX folder, then select Rename. Where XX is the year of your QuickBooksversion.
      Example: downloadqb18 for QuickBooks Desktop 2018.
    4. Add .old to the end of the name.
      Example: downloadqbxx.old.
  5. Try to update QuickBooks Desktop again.
