Can I combine two bank accounts in the chart of accounts? The URL for the online banking changed and I couldn't change it in QBO.

I started a new account and connected to the new online banking portal and everything from the date of the bank's transition downloaded to QBO just fine.

Can I combine two bank accounts in the chart of accounts? The URL for the online banking changed and I couldn't change it in QBO.

Hi there, @treasurer177.

Yes, you can merge all the data into the account you want to keep and make the duplicate account inactive in the chart of accounts in QuickBooks Online. I'll show you the steps below.

Before that, if you're merging accounts with reconciliation reports, the account being merged won't keep its reconciliation history. Make sure to save those reports so you don't lose them. The transactions will remain on the merged account and stay reconciled.

If both account registers have an opening balance equity transaction, remove the most recent one before merging. The older transactions will set the opening balance for the new account.

Please know that once you merge your bank account, it can’t be undone. Here’s how to combine them in QuickBooks Online:

  1. Go to Accounting, then choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. Find the account you want to keep and click the dropdown ▼ in the Action column, then select Edit
  3. Note the Account Name, Account Type, and Detail Type. These must match the account you want to merge.
  4. Check if the account is a subaccount or a parent account. The names of subaccounts are indented in the Name column of the Chart of Accounts list. If it is, note the parent account it's tied to.
  5. Return to the Chart of Accounts and locate the duplicate account (the one to be discarded). Click the dropdown ▼ in the Action column and select Edit.
  6. Change the Account Name and Detail Type to match the account you want to keep.
  7. Adjust the Account Type as needed to ensure proper merging (e.g., subaccounts must have the same parent).
  8. Click Save and confirm by selecting Yes, merge accounts to combine the accounts and transfer transactions.
