A bank deposit does not show up as a credit on my customer balance

We are a contracting service and our customers pay us an deposit before we start work. Now this money received comes in through my bank feed and I need to review it and add it so that it shows up on my bank account. When I open the transaction, the choices are only two: either deposit or sales receipt. Neither of these 2 give me a credit to the customer. Is there anyway that I can do this without first having to do a "receive payments" step beforehand so that QB can then match the two up when going back to bank feeds?

A bank deposit does not show up as a credit on my customer balance

Hello @blondi,

Thank you for reaching out to us here in the Community space. I can clarify things about the Banking feature in QuickBooks Online.

When you link your bank account, we automatically download the income and expenses on your behalf. These transactions require your approval and attention to categorize them correctly into the system.

Adding the payment as a customer credit in Banking is unavailable. The Add option creates a separate transaction, while Match allows you to link the downloaded deposit to an existing transaction in QuickBooks.

There are two options available that you can consider. Either exclude the deposit in Bank Feeds and add a credit to the customer's balance or set up a progress invoice.

Progress invoicing allows you to send invoices over time as you work off an estimate. It lets you split an estimate into as many invoices as you need.

Instead of a full payment at the beginning of a project, you can invoice customers for partial payments. In this method, you can match the downloaded deposit (partial) to an invoice.

It keeps project payments organized and connected from start to finish. Here's what it looks like:

There's a process you need to set up to use the feature effectively. Please visit this link for more info: Set up and send progress invoices in QuickBooks Online.

Aside from Add and Match, you can also view and review multiple matches. You can use this article to learn how to effectively navigate QuickBooks Banking: Categorise and match online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.

Thanks AlcaeusF, I will consider doing progress invoicing, it makes sense.
