Is it possible to change an existing account type mid year?

Hi there, eithne.

Yes, it's possible to change the account type for an existing account anytime or on the midyear. However, changing the type or detail type of account may affect your accounting and reporting. I'd recommend consulting an accountant for guidance so your account stays accurate.

I recommend going to the Chart of Accounts page. From there, you can manually choose which existing account you want to edit or change.

Here's how:

  1. Click Accounting on the left navigation menu and choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. Select the account you want to change and click the drop-down arrow under the Action column.
  3. Choose Edit.
  4. Select the Account Type and Detail Type that you'd like.
  5. Hit Save and Close.
  6. You'll be prompted with Changing the type or detail type of an account may affect your accounting and reporting. Are you sure you want to do this? Hit the Yes button to confirm.

Is it possible to change an existing account type mid year?

Hello there,

Let's work together and figure out what's going on with your Save & close button. I'll share the troubleshooting steps we can perform to address this issue.

It's possible you’re experiencing browser issue, that’s why you’re unable to save your changes when editing an existing account. To fix this, let’s use a private browser to access your QuickBooks account. This doesn't retain cache files so this helps in ruling out the possibility of a webpage issue.

Here are the keyboard shortcuts:

  • For Firefox, press Ctrl + Shift + P
  • For Chrome, press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • For Safari, hold down Command + Shift + N

Once done, you’ll want to follow the process shared by my colleague above. If you’re able to save your work, you’ll need to clear the browser's cache. By doing this, it’ll remove the cache in your default browser, so you can start with a clean slate. You can also switch to other supported browsers as alternatives.

Once everything is in order, you’ll want to read through this guide that will assist you with matching your QuickBooks accounts and bank statements: Reconcile an account in QuickBooks Online.

If you have follow-up questions or concerns with changing your account type or the chart of accounts, please let me know. I'll be happy to answer them for you. Take care and stay safe.
