How do I apply IGST on my invoices?

This article will help you understand when and why QuickBooks shows GST or IGST rates when creating invoices and sales receipts.

QuickBooks uses the following criteria to determine whether a transaction is IntraState (within the same state) or InterState (between two states) and consequently displays GST or IGST rates.

  1. Customer GST Registration Type. Know more about GST registration type for customers in QuickBooks
  2. Place of Supply selected in the invoice/sales receipt.
  3. Your business location. QuickBooks determines your business location using your Company GSTIN that has been entered in Tax Settings. The first 2 characters in your GSTIN indicate your state. For example, if GSTIN is 29AKPCL2987F1Z1, QuickBooks will use the first 2 characters, i.e. 29 to determine the business' state of operation, i.e. Karnataka.
    1. Do note that QuickBooks does not use the State entered in Company Address to identify your business location.
    2. If a GSTIN is not entered in Tax Settings, QuickBooks will assume that the transactions are intrastate and consequently will only show GST rates.
    3. Business location is immaterial in case the Customer GST Registration Type is Overseas, SEZ or Deemed Exports. The sales transactions will only show IGST rates in such cases.

The table below will help you understand which rate type you will see in transactions; based on the Customer GST Registration Type and the sale being an IntraState or InterState transaction.
