I've got you covered today, jodie-free2move-.

The .QBB file extension is a backup file format used by Quickbooks Desktop (QBDT). Thus, you will need an updated version of QBDT software to restore the old file.

If you no longer have the QBDT 2018 version installed on your computer, you can download the free trial and most updated version of the software and then open the backup company file from there.

For the complete instructions on how to download the trial version, kindly check out this link: Download a trial of QuickBooks Desktop.

After the complete download, you can now restore the old file. To do this, here's how:

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Select the File menu, then Open or Restore Company...
  3. Restore the file based on its type: Windows backup file (.qbb)

Learn more about the process of restoring your file through this article: Restore your file.

Also, if you're planning to migrate your QBDT 2018 data to QuickBooks Online (QBO), you can refer to this article: Move your QuickBooks Desktop file to QuickBooks Online.

I have the same question!

Which trial version of quickbooks desktop should I download?

I tried to open with a 2019 desktop version but I keep getting 6123 errors?

thanks

@bridgetm

Which QBD country version did you use to create the file? US, UK, or CA?

I'm in Australia so I'm honestly not sure.  I thought they were all the same!

Can you create a dummy or open the sample file?

Navigate to Edit menu > Preferences

Notice on the left panel, what term do you find? Is it Sales Tax, VAT, or GST?

Ahh - sales tax, so looks like a US version.

so I should try to find a trial desktop version for Australia?

Does it matter what version if I'm opening a .qbb from 2018?

thanks so much for your help btw, its been so frustrating trying to figure out myself

cheers

@bridgetm

There is no QBD AU version any longer. Utilize the trial license of QBD 2021 to open your file.

@Fiat Lux - ASIA  - thanks so much for your help.

I tried your advice but with no luck.

I was able to go to file/utilities/restore backup for earlier quickbooks version and this seemed to work with a decent file size attached to the new .qbw file but quickbooks will not actually open the file ( i get a (-6094, 0) error (which I can't seem to find any info on anywhere).  If I run a file repair & try to open I get a message about the file not being created with the US version.

I also had a 2017 .qbw file that I tried to open in both the 2021 and 2019 desktop versions but again the above errors.

Any other suggestions??

I have to say the support line was not at all helpful and referred me to an online conversion service.

I have read about opening .qbb files in excel but I can't even seem to work that out lol

Any suggestions welcome

thanks

thanks @Fiat Lux - ASIA  - you've been super helpful

I had a suggestion though to try the trial of Reckon desktop in Australia which is an offshoot of Quicken back in the day.  I didn't even know they still existed!  Anyway - Success :)

cheers
