Hi there, tturleys.
At his time, there's no reported case for other users who encountered fake trojan scam pop-up message. This scam message appears in the form of a pop-up window claiming that your computer has been infected and you need to take urgent action to get rid of it.
You can try closing the tab or window of the browser that hosted the pop-up. You can also open the Task Manager to end all running trojan application.
If you need further assistance, I'd suggest contacting your IT guy. They'll help you remove the pop-up message from appearing again when opening QuickBooks Online.
Please reply to this post if you need anything else. I'm here to help.
I am now having this issue and no one at Microsoft or QuickBooks support has been able to help me. There's a fake popup that appears when I open my Quickbooks that says the file has been damaged and needs to be rebuilt or to call a fake customer service number. I did call the number and they wanted $1300 to fix the computer.
Hi there, ZGrant.
It seems that you've encountered a customer support scam. Most of the time, they'll convince you that there’s a problem with your company file, then offer you a fix. To help you avoid fake customer support scams, I recommend reading our online security tips.
You may also coordinate with your local IT support. They can advise you what antivirus software to use so you can prevent unwanted pop-ups or any malicious adware.
I'm also additional this article to learn how to determine phishing, spam, spoof, or hoax emails: Identify suspicious activity, phishing scams, and potential fraud.
If you have any other concerns or questions, don't hesitate to add a reply below. I'll be around to help.
Thank you for that advice, but it doesn't fix the problem. How did they get a pop up to occur within the QB software and why can't your tech's solve that issue? There's literally a pop up that happens in the middle of the screen once I open the QB software and if you hit close, it closes out the program. QB has already told me that this is a scam, but no one has been able to figure out how to remove this from our program. It comes up even before our company file is opened after starting QBs.
I appreciate you getting back to us, ZGrant.
I know that this fake trojan scam popup has been keeping you from using QuickBooks seamlessly. However, the pop-up message you're getting has something to do with your computer. You might need help from an IT professional to help check the settings of your device.
If the pop-up is no longer there but you're still unable to work with the program, I'm leaving you this article that serves as a complete guide on the process of fixing freezing issues or when the software stops working: QuickBooks Desktop won't open, has stopped working, or not responding. This article may be for US but the steps is applicable to AU.

Edit: Pic now attached.
I did share it but now there’s an error indicating that it won’t accept jpeg files so I’ll have to change the extension on my computer and repost later.
Hello Zgrant,
Thanks for sharing the screenshot. I understand you're having issues with the pop-up showing when you open your QuickBooks account. Are you using the QuickBooks Desktop version in Australia? If so, I'd recommend contacting the Reckon support team. In Australia, the QuickBooks Desktop version is called Reckon Account.
For assistance, please contact Reckon at https://www.reckon.com/au/contact-us/. As much as I love to help you with this, however, my tools and access are limited on this kind of account. The best department to reach out to is the Reckon department.
Post again in the Community if you have questions about QuickBooks Online version. Have a nice day!
Which QB Desktop year version do you have?
I’m located in the US, not Australia. We are using QB Premier Pro 2022.
Your post appears in the AU Community, not the US Community. Did you upgrade your file for an older QB Desktop version? Have you tried to run the Verify/Rebuild Data utility?
Thank you for providing us with a screenshot of the error you're having, @ZGrant.
The error you're having A data problem that prevents QuickBooks from continuing can be caused by some minor data issues with your company file. Try running the Rebuild and Verify Utility tool to fix possible data damage on your company file.
But first, make sure to update QuickBooks Desktop to the latest release to keep your software up-to-date so you always have the latest features and fixes.
Here's how to rebuild and verify your data:
I'm adding this article for more troubleshooting steps: Fix data damage on your QuickBooks Desktop company file.

I didn’t know this was an Australian thread when posting - I was just searching for someone who had a problem similar to my issue. Secondly, MaryJoy, that has already been done. There is nothing wrong with our file. All tests through the QB tool and everything done by the QB techs when they remote logged in show that our file is fine and never reports any errors. The only issue is this pop up that comes up when you open the program and you can’t move the pop up window - you have to work around it. The program still works in the background, but if you close the pop up window, it also closes the QB program.
Try opening the sample file. Did you encounter the same error message?
I appreciate you for contacting our support, ZGrant.
Since the same issue persists even after performing some troubleshooting steps, I'd recommend reaching out to our Customer Support team.
One of our agents there will relay this to our Engineers so they can open an investigation. You can contact them through the Help menu.
Also, feel free to visit our Help Articles page for more resources on managing your QuickBooks file.
You can always post on the forum whenever you have concerns.
Did you find a solution to this? It just started happening to me and I've run antivirus and malware detection and it finds nothing. It is absolutely a quickbooks issue - they seem to have messed with the code of it somehow. Let me know.
Can you find the following files in the same folder?
90s.trf
QuickBooksDownloader.exe.config
QuickBooksDownloader.exe.manifest
I'll check when I get back but I found a thread on Reddit that described this. Found a hidden folder and some fake startup tasks. Once deleted it seems to have gone away! Ridiculous QB has not made this more public. My theory is it came from their servers and nothing a user clicked on.
I am currently dealing with this. Data services confirmed it is an ongoing investigation but as of yet no solutions. Any idea of the file names to delete? I have spent countless hours on this.
Hi mlhappy,
I understand this issue needs to be resolved immediately since data is involved. However, I'm going to let you contact our QB Desktop Support again to follow this up since I'm unable to do further steps from here.
You can expect to have an email from the team who checks your company file.
If you have other questions in mind, feel free to go back to this thread.
Try to chat with Support again to resolve the issue. If you're having no luck, send me a private message and we can help sort it out.
what was the hidden folder/files ? I'm having the same issue.
