Why is it so hard to set a default invoice template?

Why is it so ridiculously hard to set a default Invoice Template? I've tried SOOOO MANY suggestions that have been offered here to no avail. I've watched YouTube videos. I've tried going through "Edit - Preferences..."; "Lists - Templates..."  I finally had to make all the other invoice templates inactive.  It shouldn't be this hard. Add a simple box that sets a default for invoices. Why is that so hard?

I've come to provide additional information about your template concern, @PTELanc.

In QuickBooks, the option to make a default template is unavailable. The program operates in a sticky mode. For instance, when you select a template and save the invoice and create an invoice again, the system remembers the last used template and loads that for the new invoice.

I know how beneficial this feature will be for your business and other QuickBooks users. To request the addition of this option, I'd suggest sending feedback to our Product Developer Team. Let me guide you how:

  1. In your QuickBooks Self-Employed (QBSE) account, select the Invoice menu.
  2. Once opened, click the Feedback button at the upper right part of the page.
  3. Enter your product suggestion. Example: Add a simple box that sets a default for invoices.
  4. Then, select Next.
  5. Follow on-screen steps to proceed.

For your reference in creating invoices in QBSE, feel free to visit this article: Create invoices in QuickBooks Self-Employed. It also includes steps on how you can print or export invoices.

Also, I've noticed that you've mentioned Edit and Preferences menu which is only available if you're using QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT). If so, here's how you can send a product suggestion using QBDT:

  1. Go to the Help tab.
  2. Select Send Feedback Online.
  3. Click Product Suggestion.
  4. Follow on-screen steps to proceed.

You can also browse through our Help articles page to look for helpful guides and articles that you can bookmark for easy access in the future.

I'm always around if you have any other QuickBooks concerns. Feel free to post again here. Keep safe.

Why is it so hard to set a default invoice template?

I dont think whoever responded answered your question. hopefully my answer helps you out a bit if you havent figured it out already

Not sure if this will help as I am using quickbooks desktop contractors edition:

however it worked for me.

I was getting frustrated because I could not get the template I customized to be my default invoice template and what I found is that even though I can not delete some of the old templates but I can make them inactive so the other ones do not show up and it will make my custom template the only and default one that shows when I make invoices.

Lists>Templates>Right click on the template you want to delete or make inactive>Click Delete template or Make template inactive

Your welcome (:

and now they have changed the template again (without notice) and it is TERRIBLE.  not user friendly to move expenses to invoices or make any changes or corrections! How can I get back to the original template.

Hello joycenews,

If you are using the QuickBooks Online version, you can change or customise your sales form using the old lay out. Here's how to do it:

  1. Click on the Settings icon.
  2. Click on the Custom form styles.
  3. Click on Edit for your Standard template.
  4. Edit the Content tab and click on the edit or pencil icon on the preview to the right.
  5. Click on Done.

You can also check this link to learn more about: Customise invoices, quotes, and sales receipts in QuickBooks Online.

If you still need help with your sales forms, I recommend contacting our Customer Care Team. That way, one of our agents can check your template in a secure form.

Post again in the Community if you have further concerns.
