I've just read on the US forum that we've been asking for a barcode field for ages. This is a digital age and we need the ability to add a barcode for our products. We need to retain the SKU field for our SKUs - I can't have a product with a long number when my staff picks an order. Come on QuickBooks!!!

I can see how having the option to add barcodes to products in QuickBooks Online would be helpful for you and on your business. While we can't provide a specific time frame as to when this will be available, please leave a feedback about it in the Gear icon then click Feedback. This is the quickest and most direct way to send improvements or suggestions to our system engineers.
In the meantime, you can look for a third party app that supports barcode and which you can integrate with QuickBooks Online: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/app/apps/home/.

I checked the 3rd party apps and they start at $29 per month, just for a barcode field and they have bad reviews, this is defiantly not a practical solution quickbooks, did you even check these apps before you recommend them?
I regularly have to supply my customers with barcodes from products they ordered, without this option in QB i have to manually do it, very frustrating and time wasting.
Please make this an urgent priority as a future update
Thanks for joining the thread, MarkJames. That is a very good suggestion, and I know a lot of customers can benefit from that. I have already sent a feedback to our product engineers so they can review this suggestion to add this feature to QuickBooks Online in the next update.

when should i expect this to be an option
I had to do this manually today and it took me 2 hours to add barcodes to a customers invoice, unless this is fixed urgently i will have to find another program that works

For now, we're unable to provide a predicted time period as to when the barcode scanning will be available in QuickBooks Online Australia.
