Hi deanhowell!
Let me show you how to search for customers in the mobile app.
You simply need to click the Burger icon or three horizontal lines. From there, you can see the Customers button. When you select it, you'll see the list of your customers.
Here are some screenshots for your reference:
Also, when you click the Customers button, you'll see a Search icon (Magnifying Glass) so you can easily search for one. If the search feature doesn't work, please consider uninstalling and reinstalling the app.

Thanks Alex but not exactly what I am trying to do. If I have a transaction that I have read in from a bank feed, i select customer, the full list is displayed, I then press the magnify glass and type in start of customer but nothing is displayed.
I'll share some information about the Search field function when editing transactions from banking, @deanhowell.
Usually, a list of suppliers and customers will appear when you enter a letter or name in the Search field when you have already saved them in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
However, when you're unable to find the customer using the Search field, it implies that this customer hasn't been recorded yet in QBO. To make this customer appear from the list, you can go to Menu to create a new one in the Customers icon.
The Plus (+) button on the screenshot that you've shared for now is only created for adding Suppliers. That's why you'll need to add the new customer from the Customers list.
Here's how:
Once done, go back to the Dashboard and then tap the Today icon to Review transactions from banking. Select the bank account and then tap the transaction. Click the Payee section to search the Customer/Supplier. Then hit Confirm to add it to the bank register.
Well done! The customer's name can now be displayed when searching.
If the application says that the customer has been added to QuickBooks and still unable to see it when using the search function, I'd suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the QBO app. This way, it will completely download the latest features.
You can reference this article on how to create your customers: Add and manage customer in QuickBooks Online. This includes how to edit customer information and merge two customers.
Feel free to let me know if you have other concerns with navigating the QBO application. I'll make sure to help you as fast as I can. Take care and have a great Sunday evening!
Thanks @Jovychris_A the steps you have included are exactly what I am doing but nothing appears in the list when a valid customer is entered as part of the search. I will try updating the app and see if that fixes it.
Thanks again @Jovychris_A , just tried installing the new android app and still not getting any luck with the transaction search.
