How do I record a bank overdraft?

Hi there, userpodentia. I can help you record your bank overdraft in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

When recording a bank overdraft, you can create a liability account in your Chart of accounts to easily track your bank transactions in QBO.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then select Chart of accounts.
  2. Click the New button to create a new account.
  3. You can enter any Account name you want.
  4. Under the Account type, choose Long Term Liabilities.
  5. You can select any detail type for the account you wish to.
  6. Once done, click Save.

After that, proceed with creating the bank deposit in QBO.

Here's how:

  1. Go to the +New icon, then select Bank deposit.
  2. Under Account field choose a bank account on where you want to deposit the funds.
  3. On the deposit page, scroll down until you see Add funds to this deposit.
  4. On the Add funds to this deposit, under Account, choose the liability account you've created.
  5. Then, enter all the necessary information.
  6. Once done, click Save and close.

When you pay off your bank overdraft, you can create either a Check/Expense by clicking the +New icon or a Journal entry.

In addition, you can refer to this article to learn how to match your bank transactions and categorize them afterward in QBO:
