Changing reconciliation method

Hi,

on a set of books I have inherited the person who was looking after the books had a different way of reconciling the credit card, instead of bringing the balance to zero each month they added the total from the current to the existing total and then reconciled, is there any way I can reverse practice to bring the account to zero each month?

Best Regards,

Noel

Changing reconciliation method

Thanks for reaching out with your concern about the reconciliation method for your credit card transactions in QuickBooks Online (QBO), Noel.

I recognize the importance of maintaining consistency and accuracy in your financial records. I can assist you in reversing the current practice.

We can undo previously reconciled statements so they will not destroy your records. Then, reconcile it again to zero each month.

In QBO, we can un-reconcile one transaction at a time. If you want to start over, I suggest contacting your accountant. They can undo the entire period at once using QuickBooks Online Accountant.

To invite your accountant:

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Manage Users.
  2. Click the Accounting Firms tab, and click the Invite button.
  3. Enter the information.
  4. Hit Save.
  5. Let your accountant undo the entire reconciliation.

If you prefer to do it by yourself, you can follow these instructions to undo reconciled transactions one at a time:

  1. Go to the Gear icon, then choose Chart of Accounts.
  2. Find the account, then click View Register under the Action column.
  3. Review the check column. You'll see an R if the transaction is reconciled.
  4. Click the box and keep ticking it until it's blank. It removes the transaction from the reconciliation.
  5. Hit Save, then close your register.

Furthermore, visit this page to get more insights about unreconciling transactions. I also recommend consulting with your accountant before performing any of the steps. It's to ensure your records are in order.

After that, reconcile your accounts to match bank and credit card statements.
