How to migrate from QB desktop with multiple currencies turned on to QB online? I tried exporting the file but it's not allowing me to export the company file

Hi All, Currently I am using QB Accountant Desktop 2017 with multiple currencies turned on and want to migrate to to QB online? I am trying to export the file but it's not allowing me to export the company file and giving me the error "We are sorry! We see that you use multi currency, which means you can't copy your file to Quickbooks online. Is there a way to get through this problem.

How to migrate from QB desktop with multiple currencies turned on to QB online? I tried exporting the file but it's not allowing me to export the company file

Hello there, @accounts311.

You've got me here to share some insights about exporting your file from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online with multi-currencies.

When transactions have three different types of currencies, this can't be converted to QuickBooks Online. You'll need to manually enter them in the system after the conversion.

You may turn on the Multi-currency feature in QBO to select your desired currency. Know that this option is only available to the Essentials, Plus, and Advanced versions. Please see this link for more details on this process: About Multicurrency.

On the other hand, here's the complete information on what are the data that can be migrated from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online: What to expect when you switch from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

If you're now ready to export your file, you can follow the instructions found in these links together with the getting started guide for QBO that provides steps on how to navigate the program:

I'll be right here to assist you if you need more help. I'll make sure you're taken care of. Have a good one!

How to migrate from QB desktop with multiple currencies turned on to QB online? I tried exporting the file but it's not allowing me to export the company file

Hello @accounts311,

As of the moment, there isn't an option to bypass the error message about multicurrency upon converting your company data. You'll have to manually enter all your transactions with multicurrency in the online version as mentioned by my colleague, @BettyJaneB.

While you're unable to convert your company data with multicurrency turned on, you can also look for any third-party converter software online to help convert your company data without any issues.

Keep me posted in the comments if you have any other questions. I'll be here to lend a hand.

@accounts311

You have to purchase a 3rd party service to remove the multiple currencies from Quickbooks Desktop and revert the file to using a single currency so your data file can be converted to Quickbooks Mac or Quickbooks Online US and CA version. Where is your company located?

How to migrate from QB desktop with multiple currencies turned on to QB online? I tried exporting the file but it's not allowing me to export the company file

The answer to this question is to go out to a 3rd party to get the multi currency option turned off inside of Desktop?? Seriously????  That's the solution??  I'm having this exact problem.  I can't even begin the migration because I use multiple currencies.  This is seriously unbelievable.

Does this mean that someone who uses multiple currencies isn't able to migrate their QB Desktop file to QB Online at all?  Incredibly misleading information being given out if this is correct.  I've asked numerous people w/ Intuit about the multiple currency and each time I'm told "Oh, it's no problem, it's so easy to convert over and you can still utilize your multiple currency".   I'm currently on Day 3 of having to speak w/ support for hours to figure out how to get my file migrated over and nothing.  Initially I was told that no payroll information would transfer, no employee information, nothing, yet that is the only thing that migrated over initially.  Everything else was left behind and no one can figure out why.

@BethatVIVO

You got the warning once enabled the multi currency feature.

And?  How does that help me now?  I got the warning years ago, before Online was even a thing.  Thank you for not helping me.

@BethatVIVO

This is the Global Community. I am not sure you wish to migrate your QBD company file to QBO US, UK, or CA  version. So it is not relevant to disable your multi currency setting. You may have 2 options:

1. Utilize a 3rd party tool for self migrating.

https://transactionpro.grsm.io/qbd

2. Purchase a 3rd party migration service. Check our profile and send your business email address to us.

How to migrate from QB desktop with multiple currencies turned on to QB online? I tried exporting the file but it's not allowing me to export the company file

@accounts311

Were you ever able to convert or get a clear answer on this?  That didn't involve going outside of Quickbooks to a 3rd party?  I was on the phone yesterday for 6 hours w/ support and mentioned this to them and they said it should still transfer over whether or not multi currency is turned on.  They couldn't figure out why mine was not and have escalated the issue.  Hoping I get a phone back today to get this process going.

For me the foreign currency transactions were very few so instead of taking the headache and spending 6 hours on phone, I deleted those transactions, migrated to the QBO and entered those transactions again. I am cool now :)

Ok Perfect!  So that worked for you then? I suggested that yesterday and they weren't sure it would work.  Initially my problem was that when I migrated, it didn't bring anything over to QBO except all the payroll & employee data, which it was not supposed to do in the first place and they couldn't figure that out either as I'm told that's not a "thing" that it does.  Then they tried a different way for migration and the multi currency error message popped up.  Our foreign transactions are few as well so I going to try this on my own and see where it takes me.  Thanks!

Well I attempted that option as well and unfortunately it did not work for me.  Still receiving the same error.  I give up at this point.

Beth, I found this thread as I am migrating DT to QBO and got the same error - cannot export to QBO with Multicurrency on.  My client doesn't use it, but the toggle was turned on at some point.  Did you ever get resolution for this?  Thanks!

How to migrate from QB desktop with multiple currencies turned on to QB online? I tried exporting the file but it's not allowing me to export the company file

Hi there, Wendy5678.

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community. I'll ensure to share some details on how converting or migrating the Desktop data to QBO works.

There are a few limitations to keep in mind before you convert from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online. One of those is you're unable to convert your data once Multi-currency is turned on in your company file.

Meanwhile, I suggest exporting the QuickBooks Desktop file and manually importing them to QuickBooks Online. Please note that this can be a little bit of hassle but this is the only instruction you can perform as of now.
