Hello,
I am in the UAE and learning the newely implemented VAT laws which we need to integrate with our QB Online account.
After applying tax settings in my QB online account. I noticed the tax field does not print as "VAT" on invoice or PO, instead it just shows as "TAX".
How do we change/customize TAX to show as VAT on an invoice or PO? Please help. Screenshot is attached. Thanks

Solved! Go to Solution.
You'll need to manually edit the labels. To do that, you'll need to upload your custom invoice template. You can download the sample template to see how it looks like.
Make sure you turn on the Import Style feature first:

Hello Infra,
I'd like to find out a few details. Did you go to Taxes > Edit VAT, or did you go to Taxes > Add tax? Also, were you able to see VAT on invoices before making that adjustment? I'll be waiting to hear back from you.
Hi Dwayne,
It's important to know that VAT is just introduced here in the UAE. There was no sales tax prior to Jan 1, 2018.
So, when I first set it up in QB couple of weeks ago that's how it's been printing on invoice, "TAX" not "VAT".
I tried to go and make changes via Edit VAT but it won't effect what's printed on the invoice.
I did not go to Add Tax as VAT is already setup and i felt there is no need to add any other tax?
Kindly advise. Thanks
Hey Infra,
I'd like to see what I can do to get that updated. Can you let me know what URL you're using to sign in? I'm wondering which version of QuickBooks Online you're working with.
I am using uk.qbo.intuit.com. Kindly advise as soon as possible as it's mandatory for us to show "VAT" on invoice by the authorities here.
Hi Infra, would you be able to go to Add Tax > Select Tax Rate > Fill out the info > Save. I'd like to see if that let's it show up on an invoice as VAT.
Hi Dwayne,
By doing this would it not add an extra tax? where I already have a tax setup as VAT when I first activated tax in QB. I have the tax name, agency name, tax rate etc already setup. I need that existing tax to show as VAT on invoice.
Everything is working fine, the calculation etc, it's just the label of TAX needs to be relabel as VAT to appear on Invoice (user forms).

Hello ItsAccrualWorld,
Thank you for your assistance. Your instructions were very helpful. I was able to import a customized template and relabeled the TAX field to show as VAT.
I did however get an error with Subtotal field in the customized invoice. The Subtotal won't show any amount if the Shipping field or VAT field had no values, that in a case of an export sale with Out of Scope of Tax and where shipping is included in the lineitem pricing. To fix I added a Zero Rated tax with 0% and instead of Out of Scope, I chose Exclusive of Tax with 0% tax. It populated VAT field with 0.00 (a value) and voila the Subtotal amount showed up like a charm. I think it's a QBO bug but got a workaround. Thanks again for your help!
Glad everything worked out for you, @Infra! :)
Hello,
I have a problem regarding our tax invoices . I have properly selected the mapping, but when we are preparing the invoice, it is not showing correctly.
i have a similar issue but cant even upload a template of my own.
I need to change the wording TOTAL VAT to taxes and fees as it includes not just vat but other fees.
I am using the uk version of quickbooks online.
Hello there, @vandapapriwal.
Thanks for joining this thread. I can provide some information about your custom form style concerns in QuickBooks Online (QBO).
The reason why you can't upload your own template is that, as of June 29, 2021, all new QBO accounts will no longer have access to the Import Styles feature. Only existing accounts can still save and upload DOCX templates. For your reference, please visit this article: Import custom form styles for invoices or estimates.
The option to change the TOTAL VAT text to taxes and fees in your invoice is unavailable. In the meantime, I suggest looking for a third-party app that lets you customise your invoice templates. While I’m unable to recommend an app, I can direct you to the website where you can look for an application specific to your business needs: QuickBooks App Center. Just change the country flag to the United Kingdom to view apps available for your region.
Nevertheless, you can send this request to our Product Development Team to help improve your experience. They'll review your suggestions and make some necessary adjustments in the next update to ensure we’re meeting the needs of our customers. Here's how:

I understand you need to view the Taxes tab as VAT within QuickBooks Online, CLAIRE011. I can provide important information about this matter.
The taxes section may not be displaying as VAT in QuickBooks Online for several reasons, such as the specific version of the software being used, and the region or country settings.
Thus, the VAT section on your left navigation bar will only show as Taxes since you are located and using an International version of QuickBooks. Additionally, the vat tab is only available in the United Kingdom, Ireland, and South Africa.
