BURS Income Tax Slabs in Botswana for 2024-2025

There are various forms of taxes, including custom tariffs and excise taxes applicable in Botswana. These may include income tax, capital transfer tax, value-added tax, customs duty and import value-added tax (VAT). Different tax brackets and tax rates may apply to a taxpayer, depending on whether they are an individual or a business, resident or not. The taxation system in Botswana is administered by the official tax body, the Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS).

What is income tax? It is the payment made by individuals or companies to the government based on their earnings which may be derived from employment, pensions, investments or other income.

The Income Tax Act provides guidance and support in the form of income tax tables for individuals and businesses. Taxpayers must familiarize themselves with these tax tables and the corresponding income tax brackets and income tax rates, for effective tax planning and to remain compliant with the tax laws of Botswana.

The following may be charged income tax on individual rates: an employee, a director, a pensioner, a farmer, a sole trader, a partner in a partnership, and a trustee in a trust. Individual tax rates may change depending on the resident status of the individual. An individual is considered a resident if present in the country for not less than 183 days in a tax year, regardless of whether a place of abode is maintained in Botswana.

The taxable income of an individual will include income received from various sources added together at the end of the financial year in order to determine their tax liability.
