Cancel and reactivate your Online Payroll account

Learn how to cancel or reactive your Online Payroll account.

If you're closing your business or no longer pay employees, you can cancel your Online Payroll service. We show you how to cancel the service, and how to reactivate it if you need it.

Before you cancel

Before canceling your payroll subscription, make sure that you have done the following:

  • Paid any outstanding tax deposits
  • Filed any outstanding quarterly forms
  • Printed necessary payroll reports

Once your account is canceled, you'll have access to the data for six months after the end of the tax year in which that data was collected. You must make your own arrangements to retain the data after that time.

QuickBooks Online Payroll Enhanced

  1. Go to Settings and select Account and Settings.
  2. Select Billing & Subscription. (Note: If you don't see the Billing & Subscription tab, that means you are not signed in as either the Master Administrator or Company Administrator on the account. Or you purchased your QuickBooks Online from your Accountant.)
  3. What you need to do:
    • Sign in using your Master Administrator or Company Administrator credentials.
    • Contact your Accountant. And work with them to cancel your payroll subscription.
  4. In the Payroll section, select Cancel.
  5. Select Continue to cancel.
  6. Complete the short survey and select Confirm cancel.

Intuit Online Payroll

  1. Go to Settings.
  2.  Under Billing and Service, select Cancel Service.
  3. Answer the short survey. And select Cancel Service.
  4. An email will be sent to confirm cancelation.

If you realize you need to pay employees and contractors or file forms at year-end, you can reactivate your online payroll subscription.

Note: If you're enrolled in E-File & Pay before cancelation, you don't need to re-enroll to e-file and pay your year-end forms and taxes. You can use this feature as you reactivate your online payroll service.

QuickBooks Online Payroll Enhanced

  1. Go to Settings and select Account and Settings.
  2. From the left menu select Billing & Subscription.
  3. In the Payroll section, select Resubscribed.
