How can I update an invoice template straight after using the invoice. Like the 'memorise' feature in Quickbooks desktop. QBO only prompts to update after changing the used invoice for the second time.

Welcome to the QuickBooks Community. Let me discuss how the Unscheduled template works in QuickBooks. Then, ensure that you can perform alternative steps to achieve your goal.
When you used Unscheduled for recurring transactions, you saved with partial or complete data and without a schedule. With this, invoices you create by an unscheduled template will first be created as draft invoices. You can save them as drafts to finalise them once you've reviewed them.
Then, nothing happens to this type of template until you choose to use it. This is the reason why QBO only prompts to update after changing the use invoice.
On the other hand, you have the option to choose the Scheduled template in QBO. This creates a series of entries according to the schedule you set. If you choose to send them by email once created, they are sent automatically. Also, invoices you create by a scheduled template are finalised when they're created. However, you can make any changes to this entry if needed and can use the template straight based on the date being set.

Thank you for the accurate response. Regarding unscheduled recurring invoices I would like to know when it prompts for update and I choose to update all following invoices, will it update the template?

Every time you edit an item or customer to a specific template, you'll get a prompt to make these changes for One time only or Update for all.
Update for all to save the changes to the item or customer. This also applies to the updates to all relevant templates. You can check this article for more information: Edit a recurring template.
