I got some insights about bills and invoices, @charleene-cambod.
QuickBooks Online (QBO) makes it easy for us users, to have a more complete picture of our business and profit. Thus, most of its features require more information so we can properly track and keep up with our business standing.
The error message you are seeing is indicating that you need to select a product or service before you can book a bill. This is because QBO requires you to associate each transaction with a product or service in order to track your inventory, sales, and expenses.
As a result, you can't save a bill unless you've selected a specific Product/Service. On the other hand, you can save an invoice without selecting a Product/Service since the system will automatically record it under the default item which is Sales. Just be sure to put an amount.
Moreover, if you want to have some insights about your products and services like your best sellers and what's on hand, you can run either one of our sales and customers reports. To know how to run these, feel free to read through this article: Use reports to see your sales and inventory status.

Can you help me do this? Can you set up a zoom call so I can explain to you my problem in detail?
Thanks for getting back here, charleene.
We can definitely walk you through the entire process of adding your sales items in QBO. Here's how:
Additional details about this are provided here: Add Product and Service Items to QuickBooks Online.

I see, I already saw those articles, what I wanna do is disable the Product/Service fields.
What do I do eliminate the requirement to add Product or Service each time I book an invoice or bill?
Thanks for getting back here, charleene.
There's an option to remove the Product/Service field when creating a bill. Let me show you how to turn it off:
That will remove the Item details section which includes the Product/Service fields when creating bills and other purchase forms. You just need to select an expense account or category you'll be using for the bill.
However, the same option is not available for invoices. Although, you can leave the Product/Service field blank and just put in the amount in the Amount column. QBO will automatically use the Sales item when saving the transaction.
Let me share these articles for more details:

I have a product/service entered in on every line item on a past invoice already saved. I need to send final invoice now the job is complete, all I did was edit an amount on 1 line item. I suddenly get the Select a produce...error that was never there before.
Does this have to do with the new upgrades with QBO?
Same crap for me. Annoying.
Hello, @PSPhoto & Not so quick b. Thank you for joining the thread.
I have the necessary steps to help resolve the error so that you can successfully send your final invoices.
To assist you better, could you please provide me with the complete error message you received when editing the amount in the line item? This will enable me to provide you with the appropriate troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.
In addition, updates in QuickBooks are designed to enhance the user experience, improve functionality, and fix minor problems within the program.
To help complete your task, let's open your account in a private window. This will help us check if the issue is related to the cache and fix it. Here's how to access incognito mode:
If it works in incognito mode, ask them to back to their regular browser and clear their cache. If the issue persists, they can utilize other supported browsers.
Furthermore, if you would like insights into your products and services, such as your best sellers and inventory status, you can run our sales and customer reports. To learn how to run these reports, please refer to this article: Use reports to see your sales and inventory status.

Already cleared cache, closed browser, tried different browser. Made a couple changes to a saved invoice and then tried to save again or review and send. Any button I click it comes up with an error saying Select Product or Service. All Product/Services have been chosen already and it has worked all the way up until the latest update where everything looks different. No user error here, something in the backend is causing an incorrect error.
What you describe is same for me. Problem happened after new QBO updates. Existing invoice, can’t save and keep qty changes. Just a simple red error message saying to select product or service.
I want to ensure this is taken care of, Not so quick b & PSPhoto.
I've checked here on my end but haven't found any similar cases to what you're experiencing. To isolate this, I suggest getting in touch with our Customer Support Team since clearing the cache won't fix the issue. This way, they can pull up your account securely and help check the cause of the problem.
I appreciate your patience as we work through this. If you have any other concerns, please don't hesitate to comment below.
We are also getting this same exact error because QBOnline is pushing us to use the new invoice format. When we switch back to the "old version", we're able to make the changes as we always have been able to before. If we're not able to edit our current invoices with updates on the fly, this will completely negate the usefulness of QBOnline. WE'RE EXTREMELY FRUSTRATED that this simple thing is now an issue.
I got on the phone with a human. A very nice gentleman. We tried different things to no avail. I tried to make a new invoice and it saved! My solution for existing invoices is to duplicate it and save it. Then go back and delete the original, renaming the duplicate invoice # to the original if necessary.
The workaround I found is to make the edits from the app which will save without erroring out. Then you can send from the app or your PC. Incredible how useless the help from Quickbooks was to end up finding such a simple solution.
Same exact problem!!
Hi Birdseye14 and everyone,
Thank you for reporting the error you encountered when entering a bill and for your patience while exploring potential solutions. I have an update for you.
Know that the error regarding the need to select a product or service when entering a bill is already logged for further investigation. However, we are unable to provide a specific timeline for when it will be resolved.
I recommend reaching out to our QBO Chat Support, so they will be able to gather your account details and link your account to the open ticket. This will help us assess the number of affected users and provide you with any updates.
Please don't hesitate to reach back out if you have more questions about bills. Take care and have a good one.
