IN: How to apply discounts?

Is there a way to apply discount only to one or more item in the invoice rather than applying discount to the entire invoiced amount?  This is a problem when it comes to multiple SKU's and only certain items can be applicable for discounts.  Appreciate your prompt attn regarding this matter.

@ darshan

As stated there is no discount line item in QBO like there is in desktop, but there is a work around.

Create a service item, name it, select the sales income discount account on the item screen, in the rate block enter the decimal equivalent of the discount rate as a negative number.  ie discount of 12% entered as -0.12

On the invoice select the discount item, in the QTY block enter the amount to be discounted.

Dear darshankapadia

We would like to update you that, QuickBooks is not compatible for line item wise Discount on Invoices. Discount can be applied on the entire invoice amount. However, we will take this feedback and take it forward to our Product Development Team.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

When is item-wise discount expected to release for QB desktop?

I saw it is available for QBO: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/learn-support/en-in/manage-customers-and-income/discount-by-line-item-...

Thank you

Thanks for joining this conversation, Axelia.

QuickBooks Desktop has already an option to create a discount item applies a discount (a percentage or a fixed amount) to the preceding line on a sales form.

I'll show you how:

  1. Go to Lists at the top and choose Item List.

  2. Right-click on the window and select New.

  3. In the New Item window, click the Type drop-down arrow and then hit Discount.

  4. Enter an item name, such as Discount.

  5. In the Amount or % field, enter the discount amount or percentage.
  6. Go to the Account drop-down arrow and then click the income account you want to use to track discounts you give to customers.

  7. Click the Tax Code drop-down arrow and choose a tax code for this item.

  8. Click OK or click Next to create another item.

Once you have set up the item, add the discount item before the actual product or service on the invoice.

For more information about the discount item, press F1 while your on QuickBooks Desktop. Then, enter Create discount items in the search field.

Should you have other questions, please add a comment below. I'm here to help.

I'd like to bump this post and say that a discount line item would be very very much appreciated for QBO, as soon as possible!

Hi PreciousB

Thank you for your contribution, but that not what I was referring to. A discount-line item is more a column next to the orginal price of each item and showing discounts applied to each item separately. I don't that it exists in QB desktop.

A line-item discount looks like this:

Item Desc  Qty  Retail  Discount Net

Widget 1    10   $7.95    50%       $39.75

Widget 2     3    $4.50    50%       $  6.75

                                    Subtotal     $46.50

What Quickbooks provides for is:

Item Desc  Qty  Retail  Net

Widget 1    10   $7.95  $79.50

Widget 2     3     $4.50  $13.50

Discount     1                   -39.75

Discount     1                   -  6.75

                          Subtotal  $93.00

                          Discount - 46.50

This is apparently a non-us version of QBO with the ability to add an "item-wise" discount that would appear on the line-item of an Invoice or Estimate. This is a big road block for one of my clients and we are considering migrating to another online platform like Zoho in order to realize this basic functionality. Please let the community know when the "item-wise" discount will be available in QBO!

Thank you!

QuickBooks Online in India already has "item-level discount" enabled to provide customised discount for each product/service along with over-all discount on the invoice value.

Please do.  Line Item Discounts are incredibly common in business.

Is there any update on this? It's almost 2 years since this conversation and there is still no discount per item in QBO.

Thanks for joining in on this thread, liamwaugh.

To verify, are you subscribed to QuickBooks Online for India? If so, you can enable the Item-wise discount option in the settings. This will allow you to assign a discount per line item in sales forms (i.e. invoices, sales receipts, and credit notes).

Here's how:

  1. Go to the Gear > Account and settings.
  2. On the left panel, click Sales.
  3. In the Sales form content section, enable or tick the option named Item-wise discount.
  4. Hit Save and then Done.

Please see this sample screenshot for a visual guide:

Once done, you can add the discount on each line item on your sales transactions. Here's also a sample screenshot what the discount looks like on an invoice:

For more information about the option, you can read this article: Discount by line item on invoices and sales receipts.

I'm always around if there's anything else you need. Just leave a reply below and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Stay safe!

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not a QBO India customer so this is of no use to me. My question still stands - when is discounting per line item likely to be available out side of QBO India?

Hello liamwaugh!

I understand that you also want an option to add a discount per line item. Let me help you.

Some features are not available in other countries. I encourage you to send feedback about this so our developers may put this into consideration and be added to all regions. From the Gear icon, select Feedback.

As a workaround, you'll want to create a service/discount item. Then, you can add it as another line item after your product/service item. Follow these steps:

First, turn on the discount feature in QuickBooks Online.

  1. Go to the Gear icon and select Account and Settings.
  2. From the Sales tab, select the Sales form content section.
  3. Mark the Discount box. QuickBooks automatically creates a discount account on your register.
  4. Click Save, then Done.

Second, create a discount item that you can add after each item.

  1. Go to the Sales menu and select Products and Services.
  2. Click New and select either Non-inventory or Service for the type.
  3. Enter a unique name of the discount.
  4. From the Income account drop-down menu, select the Discount given account.
  5. From the Sales tax category drop-down menu, select Nontaxable.
  6. Leave the Sales price/rate field blank. Click Save and close.

Lastly, add the items created above to each item.

  1. Open or create an invoice.
  2. Enter another line item for the discount.
  3. Click Add subtotal to separate each item and its discount.
  4. Click Save and close.

Need to record invoice payment? You can check this link: Record invoice payments in QuickBooks Online.

I'll be here if you need anything else. Have a great day!
