the solution does not work. I cannot use Account payable on the detail portion of the bill. The category has to be an expense account
My problem is that when I enter a new bill with the correct expense account in the category, the bill credits the wrong accounts payable account. It credits "Stock certificate payable" instead of Account Payable

The question is why does the system use "stock certificate payable" instead of "accounts payable" when I creat a new bill. What is strange is that it suddenly started to do that. How do I fix this so that "account payable" is credited when I enter a new bill.
Allow me to share with you some information about your Accounts Payable account, AlanVDB.
Accounts payable is the money that a business owes, such as unpaid bills and invoices for office supplies, computer equipment, and advertising expenses, and those that appear on the balance sheet as a liability. Thus when creating a bill, it should only default to the Accounts Payable (A/P) account. I've attached a screenshot so you can see it visually:
You'll have to make sure that the A/P account wasn't renamed to a different account. To check who made the changes, use the Audit Log to see the activities made in your account. You'll have to sign in as an admin to access the audit log.
Once the bill is paid and transactions are download, you can add and match bank transactions of what you've entered in QuickBooks.

thanks for trying to help but "accounts payable" was not renamed. It is still there. The problem is that the system does not use it when I enter a bill. Instead it uses "Stock Certificated Payable" which is also an accounts payable I have. When I enter bill from vendors I pay in Euros, it works correctly selecting the "account payable Euros" but when I enter a bill for a vendor I pay in US dollars, it wrongly use "Stock Certificate Payable"
I can't figure out how to fix this for future transactions and how to fix the transactions that were wrongly recorded.

I appreciate you for getting back to us here on the Community page. I can share with you some insights about how bill transactions work with QuickBooks Online.
Generally, unpaid bills are posted under the Accounts Payable. Since your transaction is posted into a different account, I would recommend deleting the bill.
Once done, recreate it with the desired account. If the transaction is still posted into the stock certificate payable account, let's proceed with checking out the category types of the accounts linked to that transaction.
If you need to modify the types, select Edit under Action, then make the necessary changes from there.

thanks. I did what you suggested but did not see anything wrong with the wat the accounts are set up in the charts of account. The stock certificate payable account was created as an account payable in 2014 since I had to pay someone using stocks. These were entered via a journal transaction. Please see below. Since then the system never used that account again. However, starting 9/30/20, all of a sudden all bill I entered, no matter the expense category, is posted against this Stock certificate payable instead of the normal account payable account.
I also entered a fictitious bill under the advertising and promotion category. As you can see it uses the "stock certificate payable" account instead of "accounts payable"
I'd be happy to clarify this, Alan.
QuickBooks Online has a default Accounts Payable (A/P) posting account for bills. It can't be replaced, but it can be renamed. You can also add another A/P account and name it as such, but you cannot use it on bills.
Therefore, we can say that the original A/P was renamed as Stock certificates payable and a new one was added. We can find a log of that change to prove this.
When this is found to be true, just name the account back to Accounts Payable.

I followed your instructions but was not able to find out any changes applied to this account recently. The only reference to it in the audit log history is when it was created in 2014.
The problem seem to have started on November 17th of 2020 and since then every bill I enter automatically select "stock certificate payable". What can I do to fix these transaction and have the system reverse back to using accounts payable.

Since we're still unable to pinpoint the cause of this error, I recommend contacting our QuickBooks Online support. They will be able to work with you remotely and check this further.

I am having the same problem.
Not really. They simply told me they were looking into it and that I may want to merge the accounts payable accounts into one account account payable account. That is was I ended up doing and it solve the problem.
