Hi there, does anyone have experience using QBO Plus with a barcode scanner? I want to use the barcode scanner to add products to an invoice or a sales receipt. I have added an inventory product (using the barcode scanner) via 'Products and Services'. So far so good. The barcode is recognized and the product is added.
Now, when I open a sales receipt or invoice, and scan the barcode of the product QBO does add the correct barcode number but also automatically opens the screen to add a new product to 'Products and Services'. When I close this screen (because the product was already added), the row turns blanc again (in other words; the product is not added to the row of the sales receipt).
Thanks in advance for your advice!
Hi there, @info,
The barcode scanning for inventory management is only available in QuickBooks Desktop.
Let me route you through another forum called Intuit Developers Forum. It's a place where different developers and coders help each other about app development, integrations, and programming. By doing so, they can see how to integrate your barcode scanner with QuickBooks Online.
Here's how to get in touch with them:
I've added this tutorial on the items you add to lists and use on your sales forms: Adding Products and Services, Customers, and Vendors to Lists.
If there's anything else I can help you with, please let me know. I'm always glad to help.
Have there been any updates regarding this issue?
This is a major aspect of our business and we will have to discontinue QBO if there is no solution to this issue.
Hi there, mike0710.
Thanks for bumping up on this thread.
I got your point and see how useful is the barcode scanner in helping you manage your business.
For now, I cannot tell as to when our development team will be releasing an update for the barcode scanner feature in QuickBooks Online. You may consider checking our blog website to keep you up-to-date for the feature release.
Meanwhile, we can look for a third-party application to help use the barcode scanner and add products to a particular transaction within QuickBooks.
If you have more something to ask, please let me know by adding a new post below. Stay safe.
Consider having a 3rd party inventory management app with the barcoding feature to integrate with your QBO.
I would be interested in any third-party application that would allow the barcode scanner to properly work in QBO. The only issue I would have is regarding data privacy when using these third-party apps.
Are there any existing third-party apps that help with this?
However, if I were to switch to the Quickbooks Premier Plus, would this barcode scanner continue to be an issue?
Thanks!

You have to consider only using a 3rd party app supporting QBO. If they can sync with QBO, they have to comply with the security requirement. You may start exploring these apps.

Barcoding feature is only available in QB Desktop Enterprise Platinum. If you are using QB Pro/Premier/Enterprise Silver/Gold, you will need another 3rd party inventory management app. Send your email address in a private message to let us introduce you to the vendor.
We have an App for invoices creation in testing stage to do this. Please email me to give you credentials and do your own testing. It writes invoices online in a platform that reads tehr bar code scanner. This invocie is sync with your QBO.
Idk why it's taking Quickbooks so long to add this feature. Submitted a request for this feature back in 2018. All you'd have to do is add another field to the product info page and make it searchable on the invoice page like SKU's & Product Name are. Would literally take 10-15 minutes to make the code + database changes needed. But they'd rather keep these features "premium" to upsell you a completely different product. I don't want to use Quickbooks Desktop.
Company has acquired an inventory management app. Hopefully this new feature is still available for all QBO regions, including QBO Plus Global versions.

Hi,
Is there any update with regards to using the barcode scanner on QBO when creating an invoice or sales receipt ?
On the product details, I only see that it is possible to add a SKU number but no barcode.
Looking forward to receive your feedback.

CurChem
Hello there, Curchem,
It would've been great to have the barcode scanner in QuickBooks Online. For now, you can check online if there are third-party apps that integrate with QBO that has the barcode scanner feature.
Here's an article about inventories in QuickBooks Online. This also includes how to add SKUs: Add inventory products in QuickBooks Online.
Let me know if you have other concerns.
There is no barcode scanning in QuickBooks Online. This is only available using QuickBooks Point of Sales and QuickBooks Enterprise inventory solution. If you are in need of a scanner, seems like you are in a retail sales environment. Even if you get this to work, the latency will turn into an issue. Inventory adjustment will only be available in QBO Advance which subscription tag by the time of the end of a year, you will had paid in full a perpetual POS license with the full retail store capabilities.
There are a number of virtual POS out there that sales you the scanner, but will offer no financial accounting. Only QB POS is fully interactable with your QB financial. The new version of QB POS has great features that sync with your E-Commerce website.
Hope this help.
Hi!
Unfortunately, QuickBooks Online (QBO) Plus doesn't support full barcode scanning functionality on sales receipts and invoices, which might be causing the issue you’re seeing. However, you could try a workaround: scan the barcode first, then manually select the matching product from the list that appears.
For a smoother experience, though, I'd recommend using Cleverence Warehouse 15. It’s a great add-on that lets you scan barcodes directly into QuickBooks orders and print labels, which can simplify your workflow and improve accuracy.
