I have set to Accrual Accounting Method in settings but reports are still defaulting to Cash Accounting Method. How can I fix this?

You've come to the right place, @elewis.

I've got several fixes to resolve the auto-default accounting method issue you're having.

First, these are the possible reasons why you're getting the said issue:

  • You're accessing the reports in the Custom reports tab. Thus, QuickBooks remembers previously saved accounting method (cash).
  • Piled-up cache in your browser.

Let's ensure to choose the Standard tab when accessing your reports. This way, you'll see the correct accounting method (Accrual).

If the same thing happens, then this is likely a browser-related issue. QuickBooks Online (QBO) uses cache to load and access pages more quickly. However, too much of them can cause unusual QBO responses.

To isolate this, let's use an incognito or a private browser when accessing your account. This session doesn't save the files and history of the pages you visit. Thus, a good place to fix unexpected QBO behavior.

You can use these shortcut keys to access one:

  • Ctrl+ Shift + N for Google ChromeA63.PNG.
  • Ctrl + Shift + P for Mozilla Firefox A64.PNG and Microsoft Edge A65.PNG.
  • Command + Shift + N for Safari A66.PNG.

Once there, please review the accounting method of your reports again.

If it works fine this time, please go back to your original browser and clear its cache. This way, the system will go back to its default state.

If the issue persists, you can use another supported web engine instead. This helps ensure you get the best and most secure experience with the program.

After fixing the auto-default accounting issue, you can customize your reports to personalize the info that you need. When you're ready, you can memorize them to keep a copy on hand for easy future access.

I'm still up and running if you have more managing reports concerns. I'll be here to provide tips and guides to help you.

A QBO support agent told me the company settings can only be changed a MASTER ADMIN in order to reflect a change to report default settings.

Hello, @mfink.

Yes, you're correct you'd want to make sure to login as the account's master admin. This way, the changes you've made will be stored. Also, you can open and set the report to Accrual then save it. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Reports menu.
  2. Choose the report you want to access.
  3. Set the report accounting method.
  4. Click the Save Customization button.

You can read through this article for more detailed insights about the process: Memorise reports in QuickBooks Online.
