restore backup unsuccessfully and got a logfile error.

Hello @Iren7,

Thank you for posting here in the Community. Allow me to step in and help you delete the previous data in QuickBooks Desktop.

You can go to the installation folder of your QuickBooks to delete the previous data. Here's the default location for the company files: C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Intuit\QuickBooks\Company Files.

Here's how:

  1. Right-click on the Start menu, then choose File Explorer.
  2. Use the address field to search for the location. 4.JPG
  3. Delete the file.

Also, there's an option to hide company files within QuickBooks. Please follow these steps:

  1. Go to the File menu.
  2. Select Close Company.
  3. Click the Edit List button.
  4. Put a check-mark next to the company file you want to delete.
  5. Click OK.

For additional reference, I've included a link you can visit to learn how to rename a QuickBooks company file: Rename your QuickBooks Desktop company file.

Fill me in if you have additional questions or concerns about managing company files in QuickBooks. I'm always here to help. Take care.

restore backup unsuccessfully and got a logfile error.

I'm glad you came to the Community with your concern. Iren7.

Let's look into this to make sure you're able to restore backup successfully.

Here are some of the steps that you can perform to fix this error. The first option is to remove special characters from your company file name.

To do it:

  1. Search for the location of your company file.
  2. Right-click the file name and select Rename.
  3. Create a file name that has no special character and Enter.

If it didn't work, let's make sure you're not overwriting an existing file when restoring your backup.

Here's how:

  1. When you are on the window that asks where you want to save your file, browse to your standard location for saving your file.
  2. If the name is the same as another file in this folder, you will see a message: "The file name exists. Would you like to overwrite this file?"
  3. Select No.
  4. Change the name of the file to be different from the existing file.

For additional troubleshooting options, you can visit this article and proceed to Solution3: Get help with Error: Failed or Error: Restore Failed. Though this is an article for the QuickBooks Desktop US version, the steps can still be applied to the Singapore version.

restore backup unsuccessfully and got a logfile error.

Hi, may I know is there any way to restore the backup without changing to a new filename?

This is because I will have many new file names just for one company, with each time my accountant passes me the backup to restore.  Please help! Many thanks.

restore backup unsuccessfully and got a logfile error.

Can I permanently delete the previous data file first, and then restore it back with the same filename?

Please assist, thank you.

I can share some information about restoring data files and clarify things for you, @Iren7.

Renaming your file is used so it will not prompt for any duplicate or existing names.

In addition to that, you can permanently delete the previous data first and then restore it with the same filename. But before doing so, make sure to have a backup copy of it before deleting the said file.

Then, to restore your data, you can follow the steps below:

  1. In QuickBooks, proceed to the File menu and choose Open or Restore Company.
  2. Click Restore a backup copy and then Next.
  3. Select Local Backup and then Next.
  4. Browse your computer for your backup company file. It should look like this: [Your company name].qbb.
  5. Choose a folder to decide where to save your restored company file. Then select Open.
  6. When you're ready, select Save

You can check out this article for additional info: Restore a backup of your company file.

Hi there, @kylel821.

I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve your issue.

Can you share the specific error message you're getting when restoring your company file and the steps you took to fix it? Your company file name may include special characters ( / < > ! $). Make sure to remove them by following these steps:

  1. Search for the location of your company file. See search for files using Windows if you need additional help locating your file.
  2. Right-click the file name and select Rename.
  3. Create a file name that has no special character and Enter.

Next, confirm that the backup file is stored locally on the computer's hard disk rather than on a network drive or an external storage device. Before restoring your backup, we advise moving it to your desktop to ensure the file's security. Then, avoid overwriting an existing file when restoring it.
