Good day, how do I adjust colum width on reports? for example general ledger etc. thanks

Hello there, seugnet,

You can adjust the column width on reports with these steps:

  1. Drag the cursor to the column's line.
  2. Wait for the scale width icon to appear.
  3. Click the mouse, then drag to expand.

You can also customize the columns that will show on the report.

I'll be here if you have additional questions about customization.

Thank you very much for your help. It is just that steps 1-3 don't work for some reason.

Do you see the scale width icon, seugnet?

Can you tell me what you see on your end? And what happens if you follow the steps provided?

Nothing happens. It only works on a supplier or customer screen. The cursor "loses" the scale width icon.

Thank you for getting back to me, seugnet.

It might be the column's width is already maximized. There's another way you can adjust it, let's export the report to Excel.

Here's how:

1. On the Reports page, click the export icon.
2. Select the Export to Excel option.

Adjust the column width as desired.

Please help. This used to work. Now nothing shows up when I hold my cursor over the 3 dots. I used to use this constantly and it no longer shows up. It must have changed in an update. Can I have a fix please? I do not have time to export every single report to excel and save it as a pdf before emailing.

Thanks for reaching out to the Community, @Jend2.

It's my priority to help get the column width to show in the report. Let's perform the browser troubleshooting to get you back on track.

Issues like this are sometimes caused by your browser holding too much data. When this happens, it can result in odd behaviors within the product.

To start with, we’ll have to open your account in a private window or incognito mode. It does not store data, which makes it a good place to start to see if there are any issues with the browser.

Depending on the browser you're using, refer to these keyboard shortcuts:

  • For Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer, press Ctrl + Shift + P.
  • For Google Chrome, press Ctrl + Shift + N.
  • For Safari, press Command + Shift + N.

From there, open any reports and hover your mouse to adjust the column width. If you’re able to perform this task smoothly, clear the cache of your regular browser to start on a clean slate. I also suggest running the Health Checkup Tool to identify any issues with the browser’s health and its compatibility with QBO.

Let me share Customise reports in QuickBooks Online guide for future reference. It outlines the instructions on how to share and manage custom reports.

Stay in touch if you need assistance while working in QuickBooks. Please know I’m here to make sure you’re taken care of. Have a great rest of the day.

I'm using QB Desktop Pro Plus 2020, so I don't think the browser matters..

Thanks for coming back, @Jend2.

Let's run the verify and rebuild data utility tool. This helps identify and fix data issues within your company file including issues like the one with your reports. Let me walk you through the process.

  1. Go to File, then Utilities.
  2. Click Verify Data. If you see this message "Your data has lost integrity" it means there's a data damage in your file. Continue to the steps below to rebuild.

To run the rebuild tool, here's how:

  1. Go to File, then Utilities.
  2. Click Rebuild Data.

Once you're done, restart your computer and open your reports again. Check if you can now move the columns of your report. You can learn more about verify and rebuild tools at this link here: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop.

I'm also attaching this article on how to fix data damage that you might find helpful. It contains possible solutions to data damage.

That'll do it. Please know that we're always here if you have other question, so don't hesitate to reach out. Have a great day ahead.

Hello, @Jend2

Since you're still unable to adjust the column width after performing the verify and rebuild data utility tool, I suggest reaching out directly to our Customer Support.

Their tools can further check your account in a secure environment. You can arrange a callback to talk to them. Follow the steps below:

  1. From your QuickBooks Desktop account, click the Help menu at the top.
  2. Select QuickBooks Desktop Help. On the Have a Question? window that appears, click the Contact Us button at the bottom part of the page.
  3. Provide some insight with this concern in the Tell us more about your question box. Then, hit the Search button.
  4. You'll now be provided a few support options.
  5. Select Talk to a Specialist to arrange a callback from a support agent. Or Message an Agent to chat with them directly.

Here's the contact the QuickBooks Desktop Customer Support Team article for more information about this. Also, check out this article for more information about running reports in QBDT.

I'm always here if you have any other concerns. Have a wonderful day!

I get the marker that I can point at the column but it won't let me drag it over.  I'm trying to minimize the columns so I can see everything on one screen.  Totally annoying because I have a large screen!!

Good day, how do I adjust colum width on reports? for example general ledger etc. thanks

Let’s get to the bottom of this and get you back in working order, @cmacdonald.

To ensure we're on the same page, are you using QuickBooks Online (QBO)? If so, let’s perform some steps to isolate this issue. I recommend accessing your QBO account on a private or incognito window. This way, we can check if this issue is caused by browser cache.

Stored browser cache for a while causes uncommon behavior to your browser that affects your QBO performance. To start with, you can use these keyboard shortcuts in opening a private window.

  • For Google Chrome browser, press keys: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • For Mozilla Firefox browser, press keys: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • For the Safari browser, press keys: Command + Shift + N

If you’re able to adjust the column width while using a private window, then I recommend clearing your regular browser’s cache. This will delete those cache and make your browser to function efficiently.

If the same thing happens, try using other supported browsers. This way, we can check if this is a browser integrated issue.

However, if you’re referring to QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT), I recommend running the Verify and Rebuild tool. This tool identifies and fixes uncommon issues within your company file. You can refer to this article that can guide you through the detailed steps: Verify and Rebuild Data in QuickBooks Desktop

You might also want to check this article that can walk you through the steps on how to generate reports to show the data you need: Customise reports in QuickBooks Online

Let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with about managing your reports. I’m just a post away from you. Take care and stay safe!
