I want to log-in and get the answer "504 Gateway Time-out"

Good morning.  This site https://www.lifewire.com/504-gateway-timeout-error-explained-2622941 explains the error more clearly than I could.  I recommend rebooting your computer first then trying again.  If you still get the error, try these steps, as recommended in the site above:

How to Fix the 504 Gateway Timeout Error
  1. Retry the web page by clicking the refresh/reload button, pressing F5, or trying the URL from the address bar again.
    1. Even though the 504 Gateway Timeout error is reporting an error outside of your control, the error might only be temporary. Simply retrying the page is a quick and easy thing to try.
  2. Restart all of your network devices. Temporary problems with your modem, router, switches, or other networking hardware could be causing the 504 Gateway Timeout issue you're seeing. Just restarting these devices could help.
    1. Tip: While the order you turn off these devices isn't important, the order that you turn them back on is. In general, you want to turn devices on from the outside-in. If you're not sure what that means, check out the link at the beginning of this step for a complete tutorial.
  3. Check the proxy server settings in your browser or application and make sure they're correct. Incorrect proxy settings can cause 504 errors.
    1. Tip: See Proxy.org for an updated, respected list of proxy servers that you can choose from. There are also several websites that offer free proxy server list downloads.
    2. Note: Most computers do not have proxy settings at all, so if yours are empty, don't worry, just skip this step.
  1. Change your DNS servers. It's possible that the 504 Gateway Timeout error you're seeing is caused by an issue with the DNS servers you happen to be using.
    1. Note: Unless you've previously changed them, the DNS servers you have configured right now are probably the ones automatically assigned by your ISP. Fortunately, a number of other DNS servers are available for your use that you can choose from. See our Free & Public DNS Servers list for your options.
    2. Tip: If not all your network devices are getting an HTTP 504 error but they're all on the same network, changing your DNS servers probably isn't going to work. If this sounds like your situation, move on to the next idea.
  2. If nothing has worked up to this point, contacting the website is probably the next best thing to do. There's a good chance the website administrators are already working to fix the root cause of the 504 Gateway Timeout error, assuming they're aware of it, but there's nothing wrong touching base with them.
    1. See our Website Contact Information page for help figuring out how to contact popular websites. Most major sites have social networking accounts they use to help support their services and some even have telephone numbers and email addresses.
    2. Tip: If it's starting to look like the website might be giving a 504 error for everyone, searching Twitter for real-time information about the site's outage is often helpful. The best way to do this is to search for #websitedown on Twitter. For example, if Facebook might be down, search #facebookdown.
  1. Contact your Internet Service Provider. It's very likely at this point, after following all the troubleshooting above, that the 504 Gateway Timeout that you're seeing is a problem caused by a network issue that your ISP is responsible for.
    1. Tip: See How to Talk to Tech Support for tips on talking to your Internet Service Provider about this problem.
  2. Come back later. You've exhausted all your options at this point and the 504 Gateway Timeout error is either in the hands of the website or your ISP to correct.
    1. Check back with the site regularly. No doubt it'll start working again soon.

I've been getting this error for several minutes now, both on Chrome and on Internet Explorer. I'm not having any issues with other websites, so it must be a QBO issue. Hope it gets fixed soon! Gotta run payroll!

I'm getting the same error inside the QBO desktop app. This is definitely an external (read: Intuit/QB) issue.

Isn't it great having ALL of your data online and UNREACHABLE!!!  No.  Didn't think so.  This Cloud stuff should state:  "The following program that utilizes the Cloud for all of your important and sensitive data is exactly like a Cloud.  It consists of a vapor that is sometimes un-viewable.  Oh it's there, you just cannot see it.  Or use it.  But you will continue to be charged for it.  If you have any problems signing on to your account, merely sign on to your account and hit the HELP button."

The Quickbooks Online engineering team is on it.  As soon as school is out and the engineers take the bus home, they will begin working on the 504 Gateway Timeout error.  Billy, the chief engineer has  basketball practice, so he'll not be able to help until after dinner.

Hi there, @wildhorsesc,

I completely understand where you're coming from, and can see the inconvenience this has caused your business. Having to go through multiple unsuccessful login attempts can be a real pain.

Good news! At 10:20 PST, our engineers have rolled out a fix for the Error 504 when signing in to QuickBooks Online. Other users are able to login to their accounts successfully.

If the regular browser gives the same error, open a private window and try again. Here are some keyboard shortcuts you can try:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Internet Explorer: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Shift + N

If it works, clear the browser's cache to remove excess data, and start with a clean slate.

Our Support Team is still closely monitoring the situation to ensure no further delays of service.

I appreciate your patience. If you have any other questions or need further help, the Community doors is always open for you. I'm also here to provide further assistance whenever you need one. Have a wonderful day!

I subscribed to the updates and this is what I found:

A fix has been implemented and we were able to confirm customers are able to login to their QuickBooks Online accounts now. We will continue to Monitor the situation to ensure no further delays of service. We apologize for the inconvenience as we worked to get everything up and running soon!

But the fix didn't work as far as my access is concerned. I am still getting the same error.

If you have any other QuickBooks page bookmarked (I had my balance sheet bookmarked) you can get through. Not a fix, but maybe a workaround for some.

Hello everyone.

We’re continuously working on this since there are still users who continue to experience the issue. You might want to do some browser troubleshooting (use a private window, clear cache your browser’s cache or switch to a different one) to check if it’s already fixed in your end.

Hi there, @nathan-hall-sd.

As my colleague stated above, our engineering team is currently working to fix this since some users are still experiencing the issue. Rest assured they're closely monitoring this situation.

In the meantime, let's try accessing your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account via a private/incognito window. You may use these keyboard shortcuts in opening a private/incognito window:

  • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Internet Explorer: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
  • Safari: Command + Option + P

If you're able to log in via a private/incognito window, then we'll have to clear your regular browser cache. This way, it'll remove all stored cache from your regular browser and optimize your browser performance.

If the issue persists, I recommend using another supported browser.

I appreciate your patience while we're currently working to fix this. If you have other concerns or questions, don't hesitate to leave a comment below. We're always here to help.

It isn't easy to experience any inconvenience when doing a task, LB26.

This error message means that the server isn't working properly. And I've checked that it's already been resolved by our engineers.

If you've already tried the troubleshooting steps above, I highly recommend reaching out to our Customer Care Support team. They can review and investigate this issue further. Here's how:

  1. Go to the Help icon at the upper right.
  2. Click Contact Us.
  3. Enter 504 Gateway Time-out as your concern, then click Let's talk.
  4. Choose either Start Messaging or Get a callback.

Your patience is highly appreciated.

Quickbooks has been really glitchy with all my clients - from different locations. I get the 504-gateway timeout error all the time. It is so ANNOYING! It is a problem from Quickbooks end. They changed something. They really should look into it.

Hi there, dorothysworld.

If all of your clients followed the recommended troubleshooting steps above, and still getting the error, then I suggest reaching out to QuickBooks Support Team. They have more tools to initiate a screen-sharing session and look into this further.

Here's how to reach them:

  1. Sign in to your QBO account.
  2. Go to Help (?) at the top right and select Contact Us.
  3. Enter your concern in the What can we help you with? field and click on Let's talk.
  4. Choose either Get a callback or Start Messaging.

Leave a comment below if you have any follow-ups or other concerns. I'll be here to help. Have a good day.

Doing the SAME THING again this morning for well over an hour! We've had nothing but issues from the QB desktop application in last two months! Every time I log in and try to update banking it says Ooops something went wrong and I have to close it and reopen and then update - or if I am doing an invoice for a client Oops something went wrong - close it out and reopen. Now, 504 Gateway Timeout Error! For what all the hidden fees are that we've been charged this last year on top of what we paid (and for what we use it for) it's really not worth it being this much of a problem! And I should be able to turn off the taxes associated with payroll since the accountant does it (and she won't link into our QB due to all the issues she says the online and desktop versions has - she uses a different version etc and has a lot of other clients) - we do direct deposit only and for payroll and some invoices (no inventory etc) as this is a small counseling office. I really wonder if we should just change to something more stable for 2020 and more customizable to our/for our needs. Very glitchy.
