If my Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2017 crashed, how do I restore a backup file to Quickbooks Online?

Hi there, @OJ7.

If you need to move your QuickBooks Desktop (QBDT) file to QuickBooks Online (QBO), you need to access your QBDT account first. This way, you can transfer your data file to QBO.

Since your computer was crashed, you can use your backup company data to restore your accounting files. This way, you can go back to one of your save points and continue what you're doing.

  1. In QuickBooks, go to the File menu and select Open or Restore Company.
  2. Click Restore a backup copy and then Next.
  3. Select Local Backup and click Next.
  4. Browse your computer for your backup .qbb company file.
  5. Choose a folder to decide where to save your restored company file. Then, select Open.
  6. When you're ready, click Save

If you run into problems restoring your backup file, here's how to fix them.

Once done, you can now import your QBDT company file to QBO.

Please take note that you can only move a company file within 60 days after signing up to QBO. Also, some of your lists and reports won't be converted because of feature differences. You can check out more its information in this article: What to expect when you switch from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

In addition, the articles that I've provided to you are tagged as United States since QuickBooks Desktop is only available in US, Canada, and United Kingdom.

I'm always here to help if you have any other concerns or questions. Just tag my name in the comment section and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Have a great day.

@OJ7

Do you wish to migrate data from QBD 2017 UK version to QBO South Africa version, or else?

If my Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2017 crashed, how do I restore a backup file to Quickbooks Online?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.  I have a similar situation, but a challenge with restoring my QuickBooks backup file.

My scenario:  Import QuickBooks backup file in *.QBB format into QuickBooks 2006 Professional, then export and import the lists into QuickBooks Online.

The problem is that I have not had success in importing the QBB format backup file.  Please could you advise.

Thanks for taking the time to join us here with your question about restoring files, VentCare.

Can you provide more details on the issue you're encountering when trying to restore your backup file in QuickBooks? Are you seeing any specific error messages?

Please note that importing data from the Desktop version to QuickBooks Online (QBO) requires an updated version of the software.

There are a couple of options available that can help you get your data into QBO.

First, you'll want to look for a third-party app that offers conversion services to help move your data from QuickBooks Desktop to QuickBooks Online.

You can find a list of accredited and approved apps at this link: https://quickbooks.intuit.com/app/apps/home/en-global/

Alternatively, instead of using a QBB file, you can import your data into QBO using an Excel spreadsheet.

Please refer to these articles for step-by-step guidance on how to do this:

Lastly, I'd like to share these additional articles for reference after successfully moving your data in QBO:

Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions after completing the data conversion process. I'm here to help you get started with QuickBooks Online.

If my Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2017 crashed, how do I restore a backup file to Quickbooks Online?

Hi,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply - I appreciate it.

The problem that I am having is that the restore process fails when it first wants to do an upgrade of the QuickBooks program itself.  The error that it gives #12007.

I have researched it and this points to QuickBooks not being able to access the internet for the upgrade task.  The internet connection is working.  Further reading lead me to discover that QuickBooks 2006 Pro relies on the settings as defined in *Internet Explorer* to connect to the internet.  Since IE has been deprecated, I cannot set those settings for the QuickBooks 2006 product.

What I am doing at the moment is one of two approaches:

1.  Find a third party download of IE to enable those settings, or (and I think that this my preference),

2.  Find a third party download of QuickBooks of the newer versions and migrate it up the correct upgrade path (taking into account things like the change from a file-based database in 2006 to a relational database in SQL Server in 2007, etc.)  I am just not sure where I can source these third-party downloads from (and a reputable source)?

That's where I have got to at the moment.  I would be grateful if you could share your experience with which is the best approach to this.

Thank you once again.

@VentCare

You have a file created on QB Desktop 2006 UK version, correct? You should contact @Fiat Lux - ASIA for assistance. They will offer you 2 options:

1. Convert your data to QB Online South Africa

2. Upgrade your company file to QB Desktop 2021 and you can use the trial version for good to access your historical data.

If my Quickbooks Desktop Pro 2017 crashed, how do I restore a backup file to Quickbooks Online?

Hi @Carneil_C ,

Thank you so much for your inputs!

I will be considering the import of the QBDT data into the QBO environment by using a tool, as I do not want to be limited by which content I can / cannot import by using Excel.

I will revert with any further questions that may arise.

Thanks again.
