I need help trying to change the customer linked to a project. All of our projects are done using the "Projects" feature in QB Online. It seems that after you link a project to a Customer, there is nothing that can be done to change that link to the customer. Is there anyway this can be done?
We have many clients, where the project will be opened under that client/customer, only to be told later that we are to bill another customer. Please help
Welcome to the Community, @NestorB.
In QuickBooks Online (QBO), once a project is assigned to a customer, you can no longer change it. As a workaround, you'll need to delete the project and assign it to the right customer.

Thanks Mirriam. I had a feeling that was going to be the answer, but was just hoping there was another way around it!
I'm assuming if you delete a project, all that information link to that old project cannot be transferred to a new project?
It's our pleasure to help, @NestorB.
Once you delete it, you'll have to recreate all the transactions from it. The feature to move the information from one project to the other is still unavailable.
I'll also take note of this and send this as feedback to our Product Development team. You can always visit the QuickBooks Blog to check for new updates and features that we have.
Let me know if there's anything that you need. I'm always here to assist. Have a great rest of the day!
I too am having this issue, and it's not a one off, we regularly have clients with multiple entities and we are told after the invoice has been sent that need to bill different companies.
Please get this fixed up soon, it's rather silly that it's not possible already.
I agree. This needs to be fixed ASAP.
It should be easy enough to fix. Please let us know when that happens.
I too need to have the option to change the customer. There are hundreds of extras on some projects and I don't have the time to write them all done and then delete a project and go enter them all again. Sometimes our clients have been purchased by other companies and they need the billing in the new company name. Please fix this ASAP
I too have clients that need the ability to a) edit the customer on a project, and b) move costs from project to project - please note another request.

I also need this to happen!
Our project was bought out by another company so we need to be able to change the name on the project in QBO. Unfortunately, your work around won't work for our situation because we need the invoices to reflect true customer name at the time the invoice was sent. Re-assigning the customer name in order to get everything under the same project does not preserve the invoice history. Even if that wasn't an issue, I don't have time to go back through hundreds of transactions and re-assign the customer name. I hope you can fix this soon.
Gail
This seems like such a common use case that should have been implemented from the get-go once Projects became a feature. Spent a long time on the phone with an amazing representative but we couldn't resolve the issue in anyway. The lack of these basic capabilities is really making me consider switching to another financial management platform as I seem to run into many instances where basic capabilities like this are unavailable or you have to do some hacky work around.
This is a huge fail on the part of QB. My company also needs this feature badly. Honestly, if I would have realized from the beginning that this would not be possible then I never would have gone with this accounting software. I regularly start a spec house and then sell it not long after I start building. At this point I need to be able to change the customer from myself to the buyer. With the current setup, I have to keep all invoices and things out of QB and in a paper file until our spec homes are sold and then I have to add the customer and add all the financial stuff quickly. This should be an easy fix that apparently a lot of us need. I know of other software programs that DO offer this feature. The only reason I haven't switched is because I don't want to deal with the hassel of migrating everything over. However, I will do it if this feature isn't added soon. It's becoming too big of an issue for me to deal with. Get with it QB!!!
Just adding my name to the list of companies needing a path to change the project designation. Sounds like a coding issue, and someone(s) missed the obvious need to have the choice to correct or change the project designation. We have a project that had the income designated to the wrong branch of a client company, but since we can't correct it, it now appears that we have no income for the project, zero margin, in the hole. Rather defeats the purpose of the Projects option. 😒
The time it takes to re-enter all of the data about a project under a different customer, is money that we could have spent on a more robust accounting software.
Really hoping this update is added soon.
Me too. I Had been using QB Desktop for many years and never had the problem or reassigning project to a different customer
We need this functionality also. Thanks.
I guess the fastest way to work around this (for now) would be to recreate the project with the correct customer. Then from the "old" project, click on each transaction changing the "Customer/Project" to the project with the correct Customer. It's still a lot of work, just not as much as re-entering all data.
do you happen to know how i can do this with payroll expenses that are direct deposit? this is where i am stuck and i would like to get it under the new project with the corrected customer.
Hello there, freaded,
You'll want to recreate the project with the correct customer, and below are the steps on how to add Time:
Here's an article that you can read to help efficiently track your project income and costs: Track income, costs, and profitability by project.
I'll be here if you have other questions.
This needs to be fixed immediately. I'm also encountering this problem.
Thanks for joining in on this thread, ssoca.
For now, you'll need to add a new project with the correct customer. Then, edit the transactions and link them to the project. Once done, follow these steps to delete the incorrect one.

Hullo Qb teams,
Any progress on this issue?
It need Urgent attention
Hi there, aemmanuelb.
The option to change the attached customer in a project is still not available. You'll want to use the workarounds that are suggested in the previous responses.
You can also add another feedback or feature request about this directly from your QBO account. Here's how:
You can also visit the QuickBooks Online Blog. It's where you can see the recent news, information about the latest features, and QBO updates.

Over a year, and nothing has been done on this "Urgent" issue. I am also in need of a way to transfer a project to a different customer. The workaround seems tedious at best and an accounting nightmare in some instances. Please fix this!
