Getting the error 6177

My team is getting the 6177 error "We're sorry, but QuickBooks can't open your company file.

Here are a few ways to fix the problem:

1. Move the file to the local hard drive (if not using hosted file).

2. Make sure you're on the latest QuickBooks release.

3. Run the QuickBooks File Doctor."

We are using a hosted file, we have made sure we have the latest release, I cannot download File Doctor because I get a permission error (even though I am the account owner for QuickBooks and the hosting provider).

Getting the error 6177

Let’s perform additional steps to fix the error 6177, mphidalgo

Thanks for providing the initial steps you’ve performed but I’m here to help ensure you can open your company file.

You’ll first have to find your ND file. This is to manually fix the file path using a hosted computer. Let me guide you how.

  1. On your server computer, open File Explorer.
  2. Search for your QuickBooks folder.
  3. Locate the file with your company name and ND at the end. It should look like this: [MyCompanyFileName].qbw.nd.
  4. Right-click the ND file, then select Delete. Please take note that this won’t affect your accounting data.

Second, you’ll have to configure the QuickBooks Database Server Manager. This helps you monitor your multi-user network so users can access your company files. Here’s how:

  1. Download and install the QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
  2. On your server computer, open the Windows Start menu.
  3. In the Search field, enter Database and open QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
  4. Select the QuickBooks folder holding your company files.
  5. Choose Start Scan.
  6. Select Close after the scan finishes.
  7. Set your folder permissions to share your company files.

However, if you have the full version of QuickBooks Desktop installed on your server computer, you can reset the multi-user hosting. Then, move your company file to your server’s local hard drive. Once done, create a portable company file and a new folder for QuickBooks. For the detailed steps, see the If you have the full version QuickBooks on your server section through this article: Fix Error 6177, 0

To help you successfully download the File Doctor, you’ll need to double-click the icon on your Windows desktop. Then, make sure to select Server to run the tool. For more information, check out this article: Fix Company File and Network Issues.

I’m here anytime you have other concerns. Have a great day.

I am only adding this to compliment what you have listed above.  What I discovered looking at the related files is that 2 dots were added to the names of all of the files associated with that company.  For example, "Company123..qbw".  I removed one of the dots in all company files, no longer got the 6177 error, and was able to reconnect to the modified file.

Getting the error 6177

Hello there, @Elisabetta.

Welcome to the Community. I can help you fix the error 163 in QuickBooks Online.

The error usually indicates that QuickBooks is unable to connect with your bank's website and fetch user's data from it. You can perform some troubleshooting steps to isolate and fix the issue.

Please begin with accessing your bank's website using your current login credentials. This way, you'll be able to determine if there's a need to update the information in QuickBooks.

If there are any changes, you can update it in QBO by following these steps:

  1. On the left panel, go to the Banking tab.
  2. Select the bank account and tap on the pencil icon.
  3. Choose Edit sign-in info.
  4. Re-enter your sign-in information for the bank account.
  5. Once complete, save the information and update the bank to bring in the new transactions.

Also, can you share the name of your financial institution? Any additional information you can add to your response would be much appreciated.

For additional information, I've attached an article about how to handle online banking issues in QuickBooks: What to do if you see a bank error or bank transactions won't download.

I'm only a few clicks away if you have any other questions. Wishing you and your business continued success.
