Learn what to do if you see Error -6177,0 when you open QuickBooks Desktop.

Seeing Error -6177,0? If so, here’s how to fix it. You just need to move your company file.

If you have the full version of QuickBooks Desktop on your server computer, follow the steps at the end of the article in the “If you have the full version of QuickBooks on your server” section.

Step 1: Update QuickBooks Desktop

If you haven’t already, make sure QuickBooks is up to date.

Step 2: Update your file location

If you keep your company file on a server, an external hard drive, or in the cloud, you should change its location. Use these steps to move it to your local drive and back again to where it was.

Move your company file

Note: Ideally, you should perform these steps on your server computer (the one that hosts your company files). If you don’t have access to it, that’s OK. You can follow these steps on one of your workstations (a computer connected to your server that doesn’t host your company files).
  1. Open the Windows Start menu on either your server computer or workstation.
  2. Type “File Explorer” into the search and open File Explorer.
  3. Search for and open your QuickBooks folder. You can also press F2 while QuickBooks is open to get the location.
  4. Find your company file, which ends with QBW. It should look like this: [company name].qbw.
  5. Write down the drive name and location. You’ll put the file back here later on. Here's an example:This image shows an example of a file path for your quickbooks file.
  6. Move your company file from this folder to your C: drive. Just move the file, not the whole folder.

Create a portable company file and restore it to your server

Your company file is now on a local drive. Now you can create a portable company file. This is a compact version of your financial data.

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop on the computer you moved your company file to.
  2. Select Open or restore an existing company.
  3. Browse for and open the company file you moved to your C: drive.
  4. Create a portable company file. This creates a portable version of your company file that also resets your file location data.
  5. Select the File menu and select Quit QuickBooks. Then reopen QuickBooks.
  6. Go to the File menu and then select Open or Restore Company.
  7. Select Restore a portable file and then select Next.
  8. Find and select the portable company file (QBM) you created. Then select Open and Next.
  9. For the restore location, select the drive you originally moved your company file from. You wrote this down earlier.
  10. Select Save. This puts your company file back on your network.
  11. Select the File menu and select Quit QuickBooks.

If you still see Error -6177,0, move on to Step 3.

Step 3: Download and run File Doctor on your server

Download and use File Doctor. It will scan and clean up your company file. This also refreshes the location.

If this fixes your issue, be sure to back up your company file.

If you still see Error -6177,0, move on to Step 4.

Step 4: Manually fix the file path

Find your ND file

  1. Open File Explorer on your server computer and search for your QuickBooks folder.
  2. Find the file with your company name and ND at the end. It should look like this: [MyCompanyFileName].qbw.nd.
  3. Right-click the ND file and select Delete. Don’t worry, this won’t affect your accounting data.

Configure QuickBooks Database Server Manager.

  1. If you haven’t already, download and install the QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
  2. Open the Windows Start menu on your server computer.
    Type “Database” into the search and open QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
  3. Select the QuickBooks folder holding your company files.
  4. Select Start Scan.
  5. After the scan finishes, select Close.
  6. Set your folder permissions to share your company files.

Open QuickBooks on all of your computers. Everything should be fixed.

If you have the full version QuickBooks Desktop installed on your server computer (not just Database Server Manager), follow these steps. If you don’t, use the main steps.

Step 1: Reset multi-user hosting

  1. Open QuickBooks on your server computer.
  2. Select the File menu and hover over Utilities.
  3. Select Stop Hosting Multi-User Access and Yes to confirm.
  4. Select the File menu and select Quit QuickBooks.This resets your hosting settings
  5. Reopen QuickBooks, but don’t open your company file.
  6. Select the File menu and hover over Utilities.
  7. Select Host Multi-User Access and Yes to confirm.
  8. Select the File menu and select Quit QuickBooks.

Step 2: Move your company file to your server’s local hard drive

If your company file isn’t on your server’s local C: drive, move it and create a portable company file.

  1. Open the Windows Start menu on your server computer (the one that hosts your company files).
  2. Type “File Explorer” into the search and open File Explorer.
  3. Search for and open your QuickBooks folder. You can also press F2 while QuickBooks is open to get the location.
  4. Find your company file (QBW). It should look like this: [company name].qbw.
  5. Write down the drive name and location. You’ll put the file back later on.
  6. Drag your company file from the folder to your server’s C: drive. Just move the file, not the whole folder it’s in.

Step 3: Create a portable company file

With your company file now on your server’s (or workstation’s) local drive, create a portable company file. This is a compact version of your financial data.

  1. Open QuickBooks Desktop on the computer you moved your company file to.
  2. Select Open or restore an existing company.
  3. Browse for and open the company file you moved to your C: drive.
  4. Create a portable company file.
  5. Select the File menu and select Quit QuickBooks

Step 4: Create a new folder for QuickBooks

  1. Open File Explorer and search for your QuickBooks folder.
  2. Create a new folder on your server’s local C: drive. Give the folder a recognizable name.
  3. Copy everything in your QuickBooks folder (including your new portable company file) and paste it into the new folder.

Step 5: Reopen QuickBooks

  1. Open QuickBooks.
  2. Select Open or restore an existing company instead of selecting a company from the list.
  3. Select Open a company file and then Next.
  4. Open the portable company file (QBM) you moved to the new folder.

Open QuickBooks on all of your computers. Everything should be fixed.
