Good morning. This site https://www.lifewire.com/504-gateway-timeout-error-explained-2622941 explains the error more clearly than I could. I recommend rebooting your computer first then trying again. If you still get the error, try these steps, as recommended in the site above:

This is an absolute joke.
I've been getting this error for several minutes now, both on Chrome and on Internet Explorer. I'm not having any issues with other websites, so it must be a QBO issue. Hope it gets fixed soon! Gotta run payroll!
I'm getting the same error inside the QBO desktop app. This is definitely an external (read: Intuit/QB) issue.
I am having the same issue. Tried two different computers, different browsers, nothing works.
Hi all!
Our engineers have been alerted and are currently working to fix the Error 504. Please go to this link and click Subscribe To Updates: http://status.quickbooks.intuit.com/incidents/mmnlvxbnkyck.
We'll let you know as soon as we sort this out. Thanks!
Same here, having this issue for an hour now.
Isn't it great having ALL of your data online and UNREACHABLE!!! No. Didn't think so. This Cloud stuff should state: "The following program that utilizes the Cloud for all of your important and sensitive data is exactly like a Cloud. It consists of a vapor that is sometimes un-viewable. Oh it's there, you just cannot see it. Or use it. But you will continue to be charged for it. If you have any problems signing on to your account, merely sign on to your account and hit the HELP button."
The Quickbooks Online engineering team is on it. As soon as school is out and the engineers take the bus home, they will begin working on the 504 Gateway Timeout error. Billy, the chief engineer has basketball practice, so he'll not be able to help until after dinner.
Hi there, @wildhorsesc,
I completely understand where you're coming from, and can see the inconvenience this has caused your business. Having to go through multiple unsuccessful login attempts can be a real pain.
Good news! At 10:20 PST, our engineers have rolled out a fix for the Error 504 when signing in to QuickBooks Online. Other users are able to login to their accounts successfully.
If the regular browser gives the same error, open a private window and try again. Here are some keyboard shortcuts you can try:
If it works, clear the browser's cache to remove excess data, and start with a clean slate.
Our Support Team is still closely monitoring the situation to ensure no further delays of service.
I appreciate your patience. If you have any other questions or need further help, the Community doors is always open for you. I'm also here to provide further assistance whenever you need one. Have a wonderful day!
I subscribed to the updates and this is what I found:
A fix has been implemented and we were able to confirm customers are able to login to their QuickBooks Online accounts now. We will continue to Monitor the situation to ensure no further delays of service. We apologize for the inconvenience as we worked to get everything up and running soon!
But the fix didn't work as far as my access is concerned. I am still getting the same error.
If you have any other QuickBooks page bookmarked (I had my balance sheet bookmarked) you can get through. Not a fix, but maybe a workaround for some.
Thank you. Say hi to Billy for me.
Hello everyone.
We’re continuously working on this since there are still users who continue to experience the issue. You might want to do some browser troubleshooting (use a private window, clear cache your browser’s cache or switch to a different one) to check if it’s already fixed in your end.

Stay around if you have other concerns.
I am still not able to login. "504 Gateway Time-Out" error. Help.
Hi there, @nathan-hall-sd.
As my colleague stated above, our engineering team is currently working to fix this since some users are still experiencing the issue. Rest assured they're closely monitoring this situation.
In the meantime, let's try accessing your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account via a private/incognito window. You may use these keyboard shortcuts in opening a private/incognito window:
If you're able to log in via a private/incognito window, then we'll have to clear your regular browser cache. This way, it'll remove all stored cache from your regular browser and optimize your browser performance.
If the issue persists, I recommend using another supported browser.
I appreciate your patience while we're currently working to fix this. If you have other concerns or questions, don't hesitate to leave a comment below. We're always here to help.
This issue has not been resolved. I keep getting this error code. This is a huge inconvenience and interfering with my productivity with certain tasks at my job.
It isn't easy to experience any inconvenience when doing a task, LB26.
This error message means that the server isn't working properly. And I've checked that it's already been resolved by our engineers.
If you've already tried the troubleshooting steps above, I highly recommend reaching out to our Customer Care Support team. They can review and investigate this issue further. Here's how:
Your patience is highly appreciated.
this should be the first answer people see when looking for a solution After a fix has been implemented on QB's end
Quickbooks has been really glitchy with all my clients - from different locations. I get the 504-gateway timeout error all the time. It is so ANNOYING! It is a problem from Quickbooks end. They changed something. They really should look into it.
Hi there, dorothysworld.
If all of your clients followed the recommended troubleshooting steps above, and still getting the error, then I suggest reaching out to QuickBooks Support Team. They have more tools to initiate a screen-sharing session and look into this further.
Here's how to reach them:

Doing the SAME THING again this morning for well over an hour! We've had nothing but issues from the QB desktop application in last two months! Every time I log in and try to update banking it says Ooops something went wrong and I have to close it and reopen and then update - or if I am doing an invoice for a client Oops something went wrong - close it out and reopen. Now, 504 Gateway Timeout Error! For what all the hidden fees are that we've been charged this last year on top of what we paid (and for what we use it for) it's really not worth it being this much of a problem! And I should be able to turn off the taxes associated with payroll since the accountant does it (and she won't link into our QB due to all the issues she says the online and desktop versions has - she uses a different version etc and has a lot of other clients) - we do direct deposit only and for payroll and some invoices (no inventory etc) as this is a small counseling office. I really wonder if we should just change to something more stable for 2020 and more customizable to our/for our needs. Very glitchy.
