The differences are.
Desktop was one of the best accountancy software on the market, used if for 24 year and only contacted Intuit support twice, about the same issue, in all them years.
Quickbooks Online, regardless of which one you use is rubbish, half baked, inferior, constant issues, doesn't do a 10th of what desktop did, constantly looking to support with issues, hours of the phone, hours trying to track down issues, only to be told, 'that's how it works, deal with it' It's far more expensive. I could go on....
btw Desktop is discontinued in the UK because Intuit are lazy, so, unless you move to another supplier like Sage or Xero, then you'll be stuck with QBO.

Hello accounts-weldon-, thanks for posting on the Community
We discontinued QuickBooks Desktop for UK users in June 2023 due to changing market conditions, and to make sure we can keep customers compliant with updated tax regulations.
QuickBooks Online offers many of the same functionality of QuickBooks Desktop, with the added bonus that comes with cloud-based software meaning it can be accessed on any connected device, allowing you to work more freely.

Fyi, you can use QB Desktop UK version + a MTD bridging app
