What can I do if I don't have an MTD section under advanced settings? I'd like to authorize QB to interact with HMRC, but I don't seem to have this option.

Hi @adrienn-bors,

Let me lend you a hand so you can authorise QuickBooks Online (QBO) to interact with HMRC.

You have another way to enable MTD other than the Advanced tab in the Account and Settings page. Here are the steps:

  1. Go to the Taxes tab.
  2. Under the VAT tab, click the Edit VAT drop-down menu then select Edit settings.
  3. You'll find a toggle switch labelled Turn on MTD. Click this to start your MTD setup.

In case you also don't have this option, try these steps:

  1. Clear your browser's cache.
  2. Open your browser's private window:
    • Google Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + N
    • Mozilla Firefox: Ctrl + Shift + P
    • Internet Explorer: Ctrl + Shift + P
    • Safari: Command + Shift + N
  3. Try a different browser if possible, to see if that works for you.

If ever you still don't see the MTD option at this point, I suggest checking if your QBO company is for the UK region, and not for a different region. Another thing to check would be the home currency of the company. MTD in QBO currently supports GBP exclusively. Anyone of these two things I mentioned being true, then that would explain why you don't have this option available.

Detailed steps on how you can authorise QBO to interact with HRMC are found in this article: Authorise QuickBooks to interact with HMRC - MTD for small businesses. The steps listed in this article are coupled with pictures for easy reference.

I'll be around should you still need further assistance. Leave a question below, and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Hi Ryan,

Thank you for your help, I have checked the other option under Edit VAT and MTD is turned on there, however I still get the message on the taxes tab that I have to authorize QB to interact with HMRC and I still don't have the MTD section under the Advanced tab.

I have cleared the browsing history, I have tried using a different browser, the company is set for GBP, not sure where to check if it's set for the UK region though?

Many thanks

Hi adrienn-bors

Are you using an accountant profile and accessing a client? We would be grateful if you can PM us with the email address associated with your QuickBooks account.

We would also be grateful if you can provide us with a screen shot of the advanced section and the VAT settings section within the account.

Hello Community Users, we just wanted to pop in and add some tips for anyone having difficulty setting up Making Tax Digital.

Firstly, it takes approximately 72 hours after you have opted in to MTD on HMRC's website.

Then to enable MTD in QuickBooks, here's what you'll need to do:

  1. Click Taxes in the left navigation menu.
  2. Click on Let's go button at the upper right hand.

Once done, to authorise QuickBooks to interact with HMRC, follow these steps:

  1. Click Continue to sign in.
  2. Enter your HMRC credentials to sign in.
  3. Click on Grant authority to continue.
  4. Once the authorisation has been given, you will receive a 'You're connected to HMRC message as below, then click Continue.
  5. When the process has been completed, click on Take a look.

That's it! Once you're able to complete this process, you can now submit VAT return for MTD through QuickBooks.

Note- Please check the date of your VAT period as you cannot file before the period ends it will block you from doing that. Also please check the VAT number is entered correctly in QuickBooks in the VAT settings and that you have the correct gateway details for the connection. By logging into HMRC gateway with those details.

For more detailed steps, here's a great resource that you can check :Authorise QuickBooks to interact with HMRC - MTD for small businesses.

We're also including a help article on how to fix MTD connection issues which you may find useful here

Any questions at all on this, we're happy to answer them here at the Community.
