Changing type from cheque to expense

When I'm adding bank payments from my client's CSV file, it sets the type of all transactions to 'cheque'. These are not cheques. How can I make QB record it as an 'expense'?

(I mean, does anyone still use cheques in 2025?!)

Changing type from cheque to expense

You can change those cheques to expenses from the Type of transaction dropdown in the For review tab, @richard96. Let me share the steps below.

  1. Go to the Transactions menu and select Bank transactions.
  2. Select the bank payments to expand the details.
  3. Choose Expense from the Type of transaction dropdown
  4. Click Add to categorised.

If the transactions are already categorised, you can undo them so they will go back to the For review tab. That way, you can change the transaction type.

For guidance on managing your transactions in QuickBooks, you can refer to this article: Categorize online bank transactions in QuickBooks Online.

Changing type from cheque to expense

Weirdly I don't get that dropdown option with this client. I get it on receipts (deposit or sales receipt) but not on payments. And I can see that dropdown on payments other clients' transactions screens... But not here!

Maybe it's a limitation of using CSV file uploads as opposed to open banking?

Anyway, I'm getting round most of it by setting up rules for the transactions, which allows me to specify 'expense'.
