How do I set up a contractor as CIS? I can see the sub-contractor tick box but not a contractor box? I've tried to follow the help instructions but I am struggling

Hello there, @michelle-barker7.

I've got the steps on how to set up a Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) contractor in QuickBooks Online (QBO). I'm here help guide you on how.

To be able to set up a contractor as CIS, first, you have to turn on CIS in QBO. Here's how:

  1. Log in to your QBO account.
  2. Click on the Gear icon.
  3. Select Account and Settings or Company Settings depending on what you see.
  4. Click on Advanced.
  5. Go to the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) section and enable CIS.
  6. Click Save, then Done.

Once completed, proceed with setting a contractor as CIS.

  1. Click on Sales at the left pane.
  2. Select Customers.
  3. Click on New customer.
  4. Fill in the fields in the Customer information window.
  5. Select the box beside Is CIS contractor and enter their UTR number in the Tax info tab.
  6. Click Save. Your contractor will then appear on the customer list.

Keep posted if you have any other questions about adding subcontractor in QBO. I'm happy to help however I can.

Welcome to the Community, Sarah. I'm here with some steps we can perform so you can successfully set your contactor as CIS in QuickBooks Online (QBO).

First, we need to make sure that the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) feature is turned on properly. I'd recommend making sure that you've clicked on Save and Done to ensure that the program recognizes the changes made.

If the same issue persists, let's perform these troubleshooting steps to check if this has something to do with your browser as too many cached files can cause issues.

We can start by accessing your account in a private browser. Here’s how to do the private browsing:

  • Safari: Control + Option + P
  • Google Chrome: Press Ctrl + Shift + N
  • Firefox or Internet Explorer: Ctrl + Shift + P

If you're able to see the Is CIS contractor box, I'd suggest clearing your regular browser's cache and cookies to refresh it.

In the event it continues occurring while using incognito, you'll initially have to try switching to another browsing application. Here's a list of supported browsers:

  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Safari 11 or newer

I'm also including this helpful reference in creating CIS transactions: How to create CIS transactions in QuickBooks Online.
