Hi both, due to the sensitive nature of the tax authority user credentials, a single error message is sent by HMRC to QuickBooks to prevent any possibility of security incidents if any of the following information is incorrect. If you are having difficulties submitting your CIS return, please verify:

- Correct username
- Correct password
- Valid UTR
- Valid PAYE Ref
- Valid Accounts Office Ref
- Valid Subcontractor UTR
- Accurate National Insurance and verification numbers (in subcontractor settings)
- Any special characters in subcontractor name (characters allowed: A-Z, a-z, 0 to 9, space & ‘ ( ) * , - . / @ £)

ye all my credentials are correct I have no problem logging on to HMRC and doing it manually. they are the exact same details as my PAYE, they work finer and PAYE submissions work fine every week.  I have had this issue for over 6 months now. iv tried contacting support, and going through it with them they have said they have the engineers working on it but they never seem to be able to come up with a solution. iv now made a formal complaint today after spending another 2 hours in a chat trying to sort this with no outcome and all the assistant seem to do was make my CIS accounts look a right mess by unfileing a load of my submissions I had done manually.  instead of removing the rejected ones like I asked.   I have also repeatedly asked to compensated some of my fees back as iv been paying full price for the last 6 months to use this service and basically its not working. so the service im paying for isn't  there.  I'm now at my whits end with it and looking for alternative accounting software as this was the main reason I came to QBO as it was supposed to be good at CIS.

Nope. I've still got this issue. I try every month just in case.

QB couldn't help at all. Just blamed HMRC and said I could do it manually on tax website. Hopeless.

I don't think this can work due to two-factor authentication?

Its never worked for me.

Hi, mackatora.

Thanks for sharing your concern here in the Community. I'm here to help and ensure you're able to submit CIS returns,

HRMC might reject your CIS return due to any of the following:

  • You have used the wrong login credentials. To verify it is correct, sign in to the HMRC website.
  • Ensure you're using the right 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number.
  • Double-check that you're using the correct PAYE Reference number.
  • Check that your suppliers have the correct references and CIS setup.
  • Remove any special characters and additional spaces in the subcontractor/contractor name field. Only use letters A-Z and numbers 0-9.

You need to make sure all mentioned information above is correct. You can log into the HMRC website to confirm your credentials.

Then, you can contact our QuickBooks Online Support Team.  They can unfile the rejected CIS return so you can re-submit it. Here's how to get in touch with them:

  1. Sign in to your QuickBooks Online company.
  2. Tap  Help (?).
  3. In QB Assistant, enter the topic you need help with. You can also enter questions.
  4. Click Contact Us to connect with a live support agent.
  5. Choose a way to connect with us:
    • Start a chat with a support expert. Live chat all day, M-F.
    • Ask the community to get help from businesses like yours.
    • Call us. M-F, 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, and S-S, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

You can also manage to submit via the HMRC website before the cut-off date. This is to ensure you won't obtain a late return penalty.

Check out this link for additional information: Filing CIS in QuickBooks Online. It provides instructions and detailed steps.

Also, running CIS reports in QuickBooks Online is a breeze. With this, you'll be able to review your contractor's monthly statement, payment, and deduction statement, and summary of the CIS deductions withheld.

I'm always around the corner to further assist you in preparing your CIS return. Take care and have a great day ahead.
