Thanks for posting here in the Community, @alistairqbs. I'll share some insights about managing payroll journals in QuickBooks Online Payroll.
When using the payroll service with the QuickBooks Online program, it is a part of how it works. Unfortunately, there's no way to turn off the automatic payroll journals.
However, you do have the option to customise your journal settings. Say you wanted to split the journal by QuickBooks product or location, before running payroll. You can customise your journal settings in the Advanced Payroll settings.
While, if you're using Standard Payroll, you have the option to change which account the Net Pay is posted to. For instance, in a particular bank account or a clearing account.
Also, you can make changes once the journal is posted.
While this option is not yet possible, you can send feedback or feature requests to our engineers. You can submit them directly from your QBO account. Here's how:
