Connecting MTD account to another software for trial while still connected to a software

Currently using Netsuite (with current integrations with MTD) to file VAT returns but will migrate to another system which does not support MTD next year, looking into Quickbooks to do VAT returns, subscribed to a trial version of quickbooks. Can we connect our MTD account with quickbooks without any effect on our current MTD connection with our current software which is Netsuite?

Connecting MTD account to another software for trial while still connected to a software

Welcome to the Community, @Leslie832.

I'm here to share some information about connecting MTD to QuickBooks Online (QBO) and help you file VAT returns.

Yes, you can connect MTD through the bridging software in QBO and submit VAT returns. This process, will not affect the connection between MTD to Netsuite. Before we ensure that you've Set up MTD for VAT in QuickBooks Online and connect to HMRC.

Here's how:

  1. Go to Taxes, and then select VAT (Take me there).
  2. Click the Returns tab.
  3. Look for the open return and select the ▼ dropdown arrow under the Action column.
  4. Choose Submit with a spreadsheet.
  5. Select Browse to open and upload your file.
  6. Hit Next.
  7. Using the dropdown, select the sheet with a summary of all 9 boxes.
  8. On your computer, open the spreadsheet and make a note of which cell the final figure for Box 1 is in.
  9. Back in QuickBooks, map your spreadsheet to the 9 boxes. Map the first cell (Box 1) and we’ll do the rest for you.
  10. Select Review return.
  11. When you’re ready submit, select the box to declare that the info is true and complete.
  12. Click Submit to HMRC.
  13. Tap Done.

Connecting MTD account to another software for trial while still connected to a software

Hi  @DebSheenD

We were able to successfully connect MTD with our QBO account. For testing purposes, we posted transactions/entries for October - November 2023. However, we cannot see these transactions on the Open Returns list. What we are seeing is Jan - Mar 2023 with 0 amount. But we can generate the VAT 100 Report for the period  October - November 2023. How does the open return list works in QBO? Please note that our VAT returns from Jan - September were submitted in Netsuite. We still plan to submit Oct - Dec 2023 in Netsuite. Then, submit returns in QBO staring Jan 2024. For testing purposes, to check the returns shall we enter transactions Jan - Mar 2023?

Thanks,

Leslie

Hi Leslie, thanks for getting back to us here. It's great to hear you've been able to set up the MTD connection in QuickBooks.

When MTD is enabled, the Open return start and end date syncs with the obligation request from HMRC (meaning this should match the next return that you're due to submit). If the dates don't match what you're expecting to submit, please check for a Take action message on the VAT dashboard or edit the VAT start month (from VAT > VAT settings > When do you need to start calculating your VAT from?).

You can enter and delete transactions for any period for testing purposes, or if you'd prefer, you can also use our online test drive account
