I am trying to submit my vat return using my spreadsheet which has worked no problem before but now my screen just shows a green continuously rotating circle with the heading submit with bridging software and nothing else
Hello Hopeofwooler, you should be able to do the submission, it could be network-related. we suggest trying different networks to see if that resolves it for you and allows you to do the submission.
I have had the same issue for months now spending days try gin to sort it out. Spoke to HMRC today who advised me to re-set my VAT on-line account which we did. It STILL does not connect to quickbooks though! The HMRC advisor said I would have to contact Quickbooks. I did this last month and was told to contact HMRC.
If this is not sorted out today I will have to close my business. Spent several unpaid days being sent from Quickbooks to HMRC back to Quickbooks and the Quickbooks still doesn't recognise MTD. It was fine since 2020 but has only recently become 'detached'.
Can you help. I will need a refund for the last 3 months subscriptions as well as I am paying for a service that I am not getting.
Hi Garry, thanks for posting here. Please note, due to HMRC's security requirements, the MTD connection must be re-authorized every 18 months. This can be done by disconnecting and reconnecting MTD in QuickBooks (from the Account & settings > Advanced > MTD > Learn how to disconnect). If you haven't done this already, please disconnect, refresh your browser and then reconnect.
My HMRC connection timed out when I was going to submit my VAT return. It asked me to login again using my government gateway idea. I logged in using the wrong government gateway ID and now it saying I need to be registered for MTD. I already am on my business account. Every time I now click to fix it, it brings up about MTD and won't let me sign in using my real government gateway. Can anyone help me reset it?
Hello Robertwebb, thanks for posting on this thread, if you disconnect mtd fully from the account and settings and then reconnect it up again using the correct details.
Once you have disconnected, let's get you reconnected.
All done! You're now reconnected and can submit your VAT return for MTD through QuickBooks.
I can not submit my VAT return and I have tried all the suggestions so what should I do ?
Hello Leo Architects Ltd, thanks for posting on this thread, if you can ring the support line on 0808 234 5337, the line is open Mon to Fri 8 am to 7 pm and is free from any UK landline or mobile, so you can do a screen share with the agent on the phone, so they can look into his more for you.
I spoke to one of you in a chat and they told me to try on 15 Dec (today).
Still I am getting the same errors. Please can you help?
Riccardo
Hi Riccardo, thanks for joining this thread. From checking your recent contact with our support team, we can see that the reason for the error is due to not having any open obligations in the near future. Please monitor the Taxes page in QuickBooks in the coming weeks and this should update automatically once HMRC send details of the next obligation request (VAT period). Thanks!
The HMRC closed my portal due to physhing concerns, we have now set up a new portal which works, and QB is activated for VAT transactions. However my PAYE FPS submissions are failing, I know the gateway credentials are correct. HMRC say they can't see any failed submissions, although I've tried more than a dozen times. Where is it going wrong? I've ticked "Save Gateway credentials" in QB but it still asks for the password every time. I've renewed the credentials in the MTD configuration section, and cycled the HMRC connection, still no joy.
Hi DrMouse, thanks for joining this thread.
Please note that the authorisation process in QuickBooks will accept PAYE credentials as well as VAT ones, but the credentials for your PAYE and VAT accounts with HMRC will be different. Please ensure that you're using the correct credentials when connecting in QuickBooks.
If you're still unable to submit after checking this, contact us directly by chat or on 0808 234 5337. We'll be able to take some account details to check the specific error being returned from HMRC. :)
I have the exact same issue. None of my details have changed over the past 3 years and I am connected to HMRC
Hi, I have exactly the same error message. None of my details have changed and I have an open connection to HMRC.

Hello!
I have two VAT numbers - one for my consulting business that I already use QB for (one email address, one Government Gateway ID), and I now have a separate VAT number for a holiday let partnership with my husband (different email address, different government ID). Is it possible to set this second MTD connection through my existing QB account, or do I need a separate account?
Thank you!
Hello Toppage, thanks for posting on this thread on the Community page, so you would need to have a separate account for this, as you can only use one QuickBooks account per business so with it being two separate businesses you will need to purchase another QuickBooks account.
i have the same issue but it tells me that i am connected??
Hello Vickie261, thanks for posting on this thread, can you ring the support line on 0808 234 5337 or use our chat support so you can set up a screenshare so it can be looked into more for you.
Cannot connect to HMRC and the VAT number is correct
I keep getting this error message
CLIENT_OR_AGENT_NOT_AUTHORISED
Thank you for providing the specific error, VRNI. Let me share some insights regarding this.
The QuickBooks Online (QBO) error CLIENT_OR_AGENT_NOT_AUTHORIZED commonly appears when you need to reauthorize the connection between QuickBooks Online and HMRC, when you set up Making Tax Digital (MTD) and the Value-Added Tax (VAT) registration number in QuickBooks does not match HMRC's records, or when you haven't entered the correct credentials for MTD provided by HMRC.
Since you've mentioned that you can't connect to HMRC yet the VAT number is correct, it's best to check the email confirmation from HMRC. This email will confirm whether or not your connection has been successful. Please know that this can take up to 72 hours. This will have your new MTD credentials which you'll need to set up the MTD in QuickBooks.
I'll leave you with some resources to use while setting your MTD and to learn more about the reasons why this error happens:
Furthermore, you can also submit a VAT return to HMRC using MTD in QBO.
Feel free to leave a comment if you have further questions or information and we'll be right there to assist you.
This is exactly the same as whats happening to me and it states that i am connected to HMRC ... gone through these steps but it only says lets learn how to DISCONNECT ...hmmm ...getting fed up with quick books .. always an issue lately
One thing to be aware of, Quickbooks cannot handle "special characters" in the HMRC password entry. This caught me out until I changed my HMRC password.
Hi
I've taken over from my accountant submitting my vat returns - they used to submit as an agent
We are already set up for MTD
When i try and link our HMRC account to quickbooks it comes up with this error
You need to do this before you can authorise QuickBooks to connect to HMRC.
