Based on your concern above, it seems like you've already enabled and authorise QBO to interact with HMRC in submitting your returns. With this, here are some possible reasons you're unable to connect to MTD:
- You've signed up for MTD recently and aren't set up on HMRC yet. Just wait for a confirmation email from HMRC advising that you can file using MTD.
- You've used incorrect login details. The HMRC authorisation isn't MTD specific and will accept any HMRC credentials. You may have linked incorrect credentials instead of your MTD one.
- The browser you're using is full of frequently accessed pages, thus causing some unusual responses to the system.
With the first two reasons above, you'll normally see a Learn More or Take Action button on the VAT Centre page. All you have to do is to select any of the mentioned buttons. Then, this will take you to the list of the error reasons and the steps to resolve it.
In case the issue persists after completing the information above, I'd recommend logging in to your QuickBooks Online (QBO) account using a private browser (incognito). This will let you check if the MTD connection issue is caused by your browser's cache. Here's how:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + N (Google Chrome)
- Ctrl + Shift + P (Firefox)
- Control + Option + P (Safari)
Once signed in, connect to your MTD or submit your VAT return. If you're able to do so, go back to your regular browser and clear its cache and cookies. This will refresh the system and remove the older data which causes the system's performance issue. However, if the issue continues, you can also use other supported browsers in connecting to your MTD.
