QuickBooks can%27t connect to HMRC for MTD VAT. I am registered at HMRC.

QuickBooks is showing on the VAT screen that it can't connect with HMRC. I have checked with HMRC and I am authorised to act for my client on my agent's service account. I have recently added a new client on QuickBooks and am waiting for authorisation from the new client for VAT, but surely this shouldn't stop me from acting for an existing client.

Thanks for asking the Community for your MTD VAT concerns, @Tom McDonald1. I'm here to give you insights about conecting to HMRC for MTD VAT.

Please know that it takes up to 72 hours to complete the MTD for VAT sign up process. And customers that pay by Direct Debit should sign up 7 working days before their submission deadline.

If it's already beyond 72 hours and still QuickBooks can't connect to HMRC for MTD VAT, check out below and work through these with the following questions in mind:

  • HMRC will only allow you to add one client to your Agent Services Account at a time, and you will see this error if the VAT registration number for this company is not MTD enabled on your new Agent Services Account. Did you add this specific client to your account?
  • When you register for MTD you are asked to set up a new account which will have different sign up credentials. Did you sign up for new credentials?

You can also follow this guided MTD checklist for more help.
